    Re: F7F

Turkey went down well, but my mid-drumstick thought was that F9F wings on the Bear Wouldn't. What goes up must come down and adapting F9F to F8F landing gear would be pretty difficult. They probably would work well on the F7F though...D.

Cooooool thread, got a wet spot, tripped and poked my eye out w/my wood.

Hey, why only usa a/c..... is there any thing in europe that would fit the daydreaming crew here?

We would be in a sorry state if the sea fury purchase(s) outta iraq didnt happen... back in the day.

Well, Bill, You gotta think that Sea Fury wings would do the trick also. And "In the Wood", although there aren't any around without termites, a DeHavilland Hornet sticks in my mind as the Ultimate. Putting Fast wings on a Bearcat gets hung-up in my mind 'cause of the U/C...did you ever hear of a Supermarine Attacker...jet taildragger?...D.

Maybe a listing of possible wing transplants would be a fun ...brain / wood exersize.

              Re: F7F

I've been thinking about what Matt Jackson said in another post, that basically, in a nutshell, more or less, the wing is what is holding up the speed progression at this point. He talked about the critical mach number and how all of the racers out there currently don't have wings designed for, or in some cases, even capable of 500 mph, no matter how much power you stuff in the nose.
"The Bears wing is good to about 410-415 KTS indicated on the course. I have been there and seen it first hand. After that point the airplane becomes unstable. The Bears limit is not horsepower rather temperature and critical mach number on the airfoil. " There's some good discussion on this "Mr. Awsome/Frostbite For Sale" thread:

I just go to thinking about it and it occured to me that there are a lot of post WWII wings off of our early jets that could do the trick, and that being made just after WWII that construction might be similar enough to not be too much of a headache to swap. Anyway, it's a fun exercise in futility If I had all the money in the world, this is what I'd do with it though!

                  Mr. D

This is a fun thread... pls. inform if this topic... hypothetical (not too deep)... mix and match a/c bodys, airfoils, sweep and straignt wings, powerplants to come up with a consensus of "what could be" AND not forgetting the across the pond british, russian, etc. designs too.

Maybe getting the wizzo guys that can cut and paste the views of bad a** a/c to see what they looklike and their kilometer speed record projections as well as Reno stead performences.

Has this web site "been there done that" in past postings with this etch a sketch thinking?

AND , I personally would like to build these semi-scale models as a fun project(s)

                  _____________

My passion (when i was a lad) was to collect thoes plastic / semi- rubber flat green "profile recognition" a/c's .... around 10" long away back in the day when they were EZ to find.

ALL this conjecture of a 2800 or 3350 front end to a P51 gets my blood boiling... making "what could be" models.... just like the green, not too detailed " recognition profile" models i collect (and lost) way back when.

Hey "D" , i like your prothetic style of postings. Do you think this could be bounced to the more active part of the board , to get more action.

                  _______________

FYI.... my first project i am doing is a "conny-G" with 4 corncob motors in place of the 3350s

                  Hot damn!!!!!!!!

How about a FW-190 with a 3350 or 4360 in it. The last version was suppose to be fast with their own engine in it. The Italians also had a couple of fast ones.

                      Re: F7F

A TA-152 would probably be better, but you gotta go back to what forbergler (via Matt Jackson) said about Wings. An airplane, just like a boat, has a "hull speed" whereas a boat won't much faster than the water it can push out of the way, an airplane CAN push THROUGH the Envelope, the results can be disasterous instability. That's what Matt was trying to explain. I posed the same question to Dwight Thorn once when I asked why an Airacobra, which is lighter than a Mustang, wasn't being raced with a Merlin....Just looked at me and said, "IT'S THE WING, STUPID!" Now, a Kingcobra has a laminar flow wing, and an L-39 (an experimental P-63). had a swept laminar wing. but there were only 2 built. I don't know why no one ever put a Merlin in a P-63 (maybe it wouldn't fit with the 2-stage blower) or, the P-51 is just SO Perfect. Anyway, there aren't enough Merlins around any more to waste on racers, SO, Come up with some way to put a 3350 or a 4360 in a jet (XF-84H!) And, you have to think that Dwight Thorn, Bruce Bolander, Dave Zeuschel, Darryl Greenamyer, and Jim Larsen had this discussion also. Sure is FUN!
                      ...SUPERSONIC DREAMIN'...What would a DO-335 do?...D.

Would be nice to spread the woodie "what could be" energy to the masses

                          Re: F7F

here's a real what-if....NASA has a large database on 'Mission Adaptive'
Wings. Basically, servos / actuators 'morph' the outer mold-line of the airfoil. You could, with "relative" ease, program a load sense function, so,
when you loaded up the airframe on the pylons, you could 'relax' the profile and 'tighten-up' when you un-load! Since this stuff is all inside the
wing, there's no parasitic drag! You could take another step forward by installing small jets to suck in the boudary air around at the wingroot junctions and nacelles........hmmph, i just looked in the mirror and my eyes are really.......turning BROWN.....i did say a real what if...
The Ta-152 has always been a favorite of mine, almost as much as Mossie!
Eddie's Airplane Patch-Birthplace of the "Sonic Boom".......and I'm reminded every friggin' day!

I am still even after Pond Racer was not that hot with Nissans looking for this kinda V-8 racer builder !

Radiators would be on top of the engine nacelles.
