Didn't Evergreen convert a 747 for testing the idea of using it to help fight fires? I'm sure I've either read about it or seen it somewhere.

Re: OFF TOPIC but had to share!

I would really like to see the Martin Mars in person. I think its one of the coolest planes flying simply because its about the only true flying boat out there. Everything else that I can think of is land capable. Seeing a 4 radial engined flying boat go over would be almost priceless.

If I won the lottery (a really big one), I think I'd have to look into buying a Mars and converting it into a flying yacht. Its got the range to go just about anywhere, and talk about making a splash on arrival. For now, I'd just be happy to see it fly over knowing there is only 1 or 2 others (I can't remember.)

Yes, they did...my understanding is that Evergreen put the airplane back in service as a freighter because it made more money -- lots more -- than it did as a tanker.

There were also some issues that made the 747 not quite a suitable for the air tanker mission as they'd initially thought, but I don't recall what they were off hand.

This is an Aero Union Neptune which carried 2000 gallons of mud at the time. As seen in the picture, the main purpose of aerial firefighting is to protect the ground personnel from the fires wrath. You can learn more and see other shots at www.aerounion.com.
