A good docu-video on the monster XB-19, a winged beast bigger than the B-29! Sure looks like it would have made qiute an easy target for axis fighters...

Notice the porpoising on take-off and landing. Makes me think the horizontal tail was getting hit from turbulence from the wings and/or huge flaps (or perhaps it just needed more horizontal tail, period).

Yes, Bomberguy on YouTube has some amazing videos. No idea where he got them. I think the B-19 was re-engined with V 3420s to improve performance once the engines were ready. Neat stuff.

The plane had 3350's, followed by the 3420 allisons. I'm searching for pics with the latter mounted, just out of curiosity.

EDIT: Here's one, but not the best viewing angles for seeing the engine pods...

I have to say, the B-29 may have been smaller, was it was a lot better looking.

I would not be so sure about that.

I remember that finns for instance tried to shoot down B-20s ( photorecce ) in 1944 that Soviets used over Finland...and I am not sure if Me 109 Gs actually managed to shoot down any of them..they flew in 10 000 meters ( 33 000 ft ? ) and the time to climb there took way too long and planes had not real pressurised cabins for that.

If XB-19 had been able to fly higher than B-17s then I think they might have been OK until Ta 152 H-1 appeared in 1945. I could be wrong and this is just my personal opinion..looks really high flyer that B-19.

                  Re: Forgotten aircraft ... XB-19

The XB-19's first flight was in June of 1941 and it was powered by R-3350-5s. It's construction contract was awarded in 1938.

The XB-19A was the same aircraft re-engined with the V-3420 first flow in 1943.

Only one B-29 was converted with 3420s and it was called the XB-39.

Looking at the planform, you can see it screams DOUGLAS! It seems all the Douglas bombers (and Early Transports!) have the same lineage.
Didn't Boeing have a BIG bomber under that same contract?

Yes they did, it was the XB-15. They were both from the XBLR contract (Experimental Bomber Long Range).

Heh-heh. Maybe it's just me, but both the B-15 an B-19 look like they are 6-engine bombers, with 2 engines removed to achieve better range

Doesn't this please your sense of proportions better?

What is that fighter in the rear? P-40 or P-47?
