As always.. we hate to publish "rumor" but... after prompting with a tip by BettyBear earlier this month while we were in Texas.. we asked a few questions of some key P-38 Folks....

As of that "asking" Steve Hinton, was *not* specifically, mentioned as "test pilot" of said bird.. *BUT*... he had talked with Ezelle and the owners of the former "White Lightn'n" P-38, formerly owned by Lefty Gardner..

As of that asking, the new owners had a "pilot" who was, at the time of asking, getting re-qualified to fly said airplane to Europe...

Short story is.. from what I gathered and have not felt comfy "reporting" till now.. (partly for want of better motivation.. partly, because I'd hate to envoke the "I know something you don't know" police... ) but, I'll go forth what I learned..... "Just the facts Ma'am" .... we're not going to see WL here in the sates for any longer than it takes to get her out of here..

I guess, as others have said, they bought her, she's ther's... they can and should do what they want with her..

Again, as always, I think it an absolute travesty of Air Race History that this airplane is ever "certified" as anything other than what she spent most of her life as!

Want a stock P-38.. go friggin dig one out of a glacier!

Don't sell your tiny ass cans of "wake me up" here at an absurd price and rape our warbird stock so you can bring them to your homeland..

    Don't like what I wrote.. ?

    Editorial privlidge!

    Jussssssssssssssssssst kidding!~

Lately, I hesitate to post my "real" feelings about anything due to getting pranged.. seemingly, for whatever I let my somewhat nimble fingers relate to what they think my mind is thinking.
Thissss one... I'm just aghast about..

Why, Oh DEAR warbird GOD WHY!!?? Would that crimson colored beef steak company named beverage company from "over there" do anything OTHER than honor this airplane's rich racing heritage??

Got my fireproff suit on... I realize, it's their money, we, the average American consumer have given them the wealth to do whatever the hell they want to with that wealth is by consuming in great quantity their overpriced, undersized cans of, whateverthehellitis beverage... Flame me on!

I drank a BIG can of an AMERICAN produced energy beverage this AM and produced a great day's work behind it!

Flew in a GODAMNDED American Cessna 172 and, hopefully, helped earn a few bux for a Viet Nam veteran Navy pilot who is trying to make a living here burning WAY overpriced US gas in his US owned, built and registered airplane..

    Rant done..

    Have I gone overboard again!

My god... I posted my actual thoughts of the moment I wrote them!!

Can there be hope that I'll once again write with enthusiam????

I find that as a whole most people don't tend to miss something until it is gone. Red Bull stood up and had The former White Lightning rebuilt to flying status. Wow that is great not only for their corporate staus, but also for the warbird community as well. I don't know if you have a grasp on this or not, but World War Two happened over there. So when someone wants to complain about one of our planes leaving to go over there so that current generations of Warbird lovers can see one fly in real life it makes me realize how self-centered we can be. I mean we only three or four here in the states to see so why should anybody else have one. By the way England called she wants her Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mosquitos and Sea Furies back. How dare we use our capitalist American Dollars to buy them.

I shouldn't have responded, because once you wake up and realize what you wrote it will be gone. but You have your opinion, I have mine.

Brave soul, Wayne, in today's web atmosphere! Ya get flamed on some of these for saying the sky is blue...
Opinion is opinion, your's is your's, mine is mine. I don't use the product, it makes me ill. I think less people would if they truly thought about what was in it!
I am going to miss White Lightnin, it was always the highlight of my year to see Lefty put it thru it's paces.
Of course, if I wanted it to stay with Lefty, I would have donated more to help him keep it. If I could, it would be parked in my hanger right now, restored in it's racing livery. Of course I could never take on something like this, but they can. I am grateful to anyone who spends the money to get any of these planes flying. Some of them go overseas, some owners here squirrel them away in private collections rarely seen by the public. At least they are in the air (more or less) and well cared for. I figure someday they'll get bored with their toys and they'll get snapped up by someone here. Several HAVE come back from Europe.
I wonder if the price of a P-38 is high enough to get some more out of Greenland? Is it even possible?

As long as it's not on a stick, and is flying, I don't give a rats ass how it's painted, who owns it, where it's hangered...etc. It's flying, that's all that matters.

I think the lot of pylon racers is small enough that it would not be much to ask for historical planes to remain in the only country where true pylon racing takes place. I don't think Europe or any other continent these planes fought for would be too deprived if these planes remain in the U.S. Most have been racers far longer than they were war machines; some have never even seen combat. I'm glad for Lefty's family they got it sold but I hate to see it leave the states.

Just curious how many people donated money or bought swag from Lefty's family at the races to try to get "White Lighting" back in the air. I for one "miss"ed her and did.

Worry not fellas !! I expect White Lightning we be back in the sates within 5-10 years advertising campaigns are by their very nature short term projects Red Bull will surely sell Leftys old plane to the highest bidder in a few years and I'll bet the price won't be what it really cost to put her back in the air
I have to say it seams to me that you guys in the States did a great thing buying up all those Sea Furys when no one in Europe wanted them ( ok there were a few guys in the uk who kept hold of a couple but not many)

you got to remember its about money and who's got it to burn - At present theres alot of money washing about in Europe with 2 dollars to the pound and a strong Euro its pick up a bargain time

Finally there is NO WHERE in the WORLD other than the states where such a thing as Reno could or would occur
BRAVO guys all us air race fans over here can only dream of 100 ft at 500 mph racing!!!

Yes, the WL went overseas, I know it hurts a little to warbirds fans but it hurts a lot more to unlimited race fans. I´m grateful to the people who keep them flying. This goes also to Critical Mass people.

I would stop short of assuming they bought WL for just advertising. Have you ever seen the state of the art Hanger/Museum those folks have built over in Europe? It was in the Air and Space magazine not long back. I would bet someone has to die before they release that collection.
