Possible Missing Threads

OK.... didn't make an announcement because I didn't think there would be any issues.. (makes note to hit self in head next time he thinks) but....

<drum roll>

WE'RE MOVING TO A NEW SERVER!!!!!!!!!

YAAAAAAYYY

<sound of applause as all the aafoers rise to their feet in appreciation>

Old box had become nearly unworkable due to extreme difficulty in updating the OS..

Bit the bullet, got a box with THREE times the storage, twice the ram and god knows how much more processer powa... and we all know, you can not have TOO MUCH POWAH!

So.. what I think is happening in a nutshell is that, what I've been attepting to do in the background keep from having any downtime is actually confusing the DNS system and some folks are not finding the site, or messages are going somewhere else.. OR.. during the migration last night, the DB was temporairly messed up and a few posts did not make it into the system..

That said... I gotta get back to work and hopefully, with some command line trickery, we'll be on the new box by noon and all will be well..

UPDATE

Apparantly, the migration utility was messing with the database while moving it and likely, because there were posts coming in during the migration (my bad, should have closed the board during that time) the DB managed to get corrupted.. good news is.. it seems to have corrected itself by running a repair utility on it..

Missed steps, this is what I get for sleeping 2-3 hours a day for a week to get this done by the next billing cycle so we don't pay for TWO friggin servers..





Anyway...

Appears to be working, only two or three posts lost, the DB again accepts new threads.. I'm going to delete the few that are messed up so they don't further mess up things... then back to the migration!

Thanks Eric, usually, it's all pretty easy but I got a hair going the other morning when thinking of how long it had been since updating the operating system on the server and knowing what it did last time we did it...

Like the lower cost of this old box but she's got her limits.. new one is much faster and a LOT newer... and will be automatically updated every morning with OS patches, fixes, latest versions, etc.etc.etc...

Back to work, though the repair utility is squawking that there are two tables messed up, they both seem to be working and updating (thread and attachment views)

With a little luck, I'll still have us on the new box by noon..

*snif* as I sit here late on this Friday night, sorting through all leftover pieces that have been "aafo.com" for the past three years in this little piece of "cyberspace" that, to me, at least, administratively, most of the time has just been.. "six nine five seven one three oh, nine three" the IP address that has been AAFO.COM (as well as many other sites, including some of the world's fastest airplanes weebsites)

Call me a wuss...

But.. I'm sentimental about machines! This has been a LOT of work this last week, since waking up one sleepless morning after putting off the inevitable for waay too long, knowing, we had to do the "right thing" and upgrade...

Till now.. it's Friday, I'm still lacking sleep, probably not going to make the Sunday AM deadline for killing the "old" "six nine five seven one three oh, nine three" box in time to beat the billing deadline...

Hell, I gotta say it... I'm gettin' misty!

How many good times have been spent here on this place?

Yep, there's been some times we'd all like to forget, to be sure but..

Since late 1999, we figured that "rented" webspace would not work for what we do... so we "leased" an entire "server" and went from there.

Over the years, some of you have been with us for all the pratfalls that this decision has brought!

In early '01, we got hacked.. OUCH!.. somewhere along the line, just before that, the company we were with forgot to bill us and then, took us off line for about three days (why we went dedicated server)...

Our first dedicated server had a scant 50 gb per month data transfer!!!!!!!!

We now have something like five times that amount!

Anyway..

I gotta get back to work... I was not able to accomplish the remote database access schema that I was attempting to do which would have had, both the new server, and the old (still old six nine five seven) accessing the same database so that when we finally killed the old girl, nobody would have even had the slightest idea what we'd pulled off..

A few years ago, Mark Kallio and I, managed to pull off this feat as he and I, once again began pursuing just "having fun" with all these electrons.... but damned if we can manage doing it again as all the security patches come into play and keep two separate servers from "easily" talking with each other..

(least for me that is!)

Anyway... sometime in the next few days (hopefully TOMORROW) we'll shut the board down for a few hours... I think (HOPE) I have a plan working that will have us all looking at the same place pretty quickly...

Thanks to those who have opened up the wallet to ease the pain of this move... in the end, once we're done... it's gonna be cool!
