Well, things are going to happen in rapid succession now... I'm going to do a final database backup at 2:30PM CST today. After the vBulletin team gets it - the new site should be operational "with all posts" soon thereafter. Then following a series of checks, and if all goes well, I'll post a link to the new forums here soon.

I suppose, if you have an airplane to see it...

Dunno if you've been up here, but you can see St Helens from just about everywhere and it's sort of.. almost, if you hadn't lived here forever, sort of scary!

The crap that thing was spewing on the 18th of may 1980 really was beyond description.. My favorite part, though, was the lightning that was spawned by the huge plume as it went up...

      Surreal!!!!!!

And now, we see it every clear day.

      Almost, like it never happened...

I sort of "get off" on they way we humans experience "odd" things...

It's a BIG thing at first, whenever something goes wrong...

Then, a month or two later, we've adapted...

Ah...yes it did. I was up trying to sort things out on my primary computer when that one hit. And I felt the one before it. On Friday alone over 100 quakes were recorded. Last nights was the largest here in reno since 1914 I believe. And no...no secret 'Bear' engine testing...but...with members of the team back in town...anything is possible.

Friday night's was an eye opener. Been thru worse tho.
OT but in 80 when St. Helens let go we were up there to watch, as they had been predicting it for so long and I was into geology at that point in my life. Didi'nt like our vantage point but had figured out a way to sneak closer. Just before going I checked in and was told to either come back to work now, or never (we'd been gone over 3 weeks as it was). We went home.
Couple of days later the area we were going to sneak into was wiped off the face of the earth...
Sure wish they'd figure out what's moving here!

              Re: Quakes around Stead

Seeing as the Sierra Nevada Frontal Fault is a reverse faultline that runs from just north of Mojave to somewhere around Susanville (I think, been awhile and I can't remember,) its really not a surprise that things are moving. I don't know if these earthquakes are due to the fault moving (the mountains are getting higher,and/or the valley lower) or if they are volcaninc like what you find in the Long Valley Caldera (Mammoth area). If its volcanic, there should be an increase in hotsprings in the area, as well as changes in well water. Either way its a bit unnerving, but kinda cool. I kinda wish I still lived in Alturas so I could go see for myself.

                Re: Quakes around Stead

I hav'nt heard of any unusual spring activity around here yet. I know the Reno area is riddled with small faults and the area around Peavine and Cold Springs, Stead has several along the mountains. I still wonder about volcanic tho as they are all centered in a very small area and there have been so many for so long.
I guess some volcanic event out there would solve any mortgage issues for several of us on this board. ya would'nt be able to give away our properties! Races called due to ash buildup?

We just learned that the major fault that's up here and affects us in the PAC/NW area, will likely be a 9+ when it hits...

Living 8 feet above sea level on a narrow, hardly anyplace on it any higher than 8 feet, sand spit sticking out into the pacific..

*IF* I'm here when that sucker hits, time get to high ground would likely be less than 15 mins...

Our tsunami alarm here is the same unit that calls the volunteer fire dept... exactly the same sound, except, if it starts up and does not ocellate, it's tsunami.. you learn to stop what you're doing and listen each time (usually, several times a day) it goes off...

We're all on a ride north (those of us who live within a few hours of the coast) I think.. seems like if it shifts somewhere on the major fault zones, it shifts somewhere else fairly soon (often in geologic time)

Seems like it's gettin active again....

Interesting place this "third rock from the sun" ey!

                    Re: Quakes around Stead

Plate tectonics is fun stuff. Only some people are moving north. Those people who live on the west side of the San Andreas fault are moving north. Those of you who live on the Washington coast I'm not sure where you are going, I think some are going south east, and others are going more of a north east (those people who are on the Juan de Fuca plate) The North American plate is moving in a westerly direction but also a little south (If I remember correctly, its been a few years since I studied Geology.) The Juan de Fuca plate is being eaten by both the Pacific and the North American plates. This builds Mt Hood, Mt Ranier, Mt St Helens, and the rest of the group up there. As long as the plate is subducting below the N.A. Plate, volcanoes will continue to be active in that area.

Rgr that.. I think the major Pacific Plate subduction zone is within less than 100 miles from where I spend 60-70% of my time at 8' MSL...

I've seen shows where they unearth evidence of "ancient" tsunami actvity round these parts in the range of 300'....

Gets that bad, only time to grab a quick one.. .take a look in the mirror, hope you can live with what you see..

                      And run like hell!

                      Or... just sit and watch..

                      (I should be so brave!!!)

Watched St Helens the day she was going off (May 18, 1980) unblieveably powerful... When weather is OK, we see it ALL the time now.. hard to remember and actually comprehend what it looked like that day!!!!!!

How long do you think you'd have to endure it anyway? By the time you pass Idaho the water should be warm.

                              Yea buddy!!

It's *almost* something I find myself curious enough to want to see but knowing the devistation and loss of life that it will cause when it finally comes (the geo guys say "not if, when") all one can do is pray that it does not!

The little finger of land I'm on (google long beach washington) has only really one way off for those stuck up on the northeren portions of it. I'm only about 3 mi away from high ground, most of it, potentially a 100mph run up the drivable beach.. so traffic shouldn't be a problem save for the last 1/4 mile...

If the "big one" ever comes (earthquake) we know we don't have to wait for the tsunami alarm, we know it's going to be about 15 minutes and it's going to be here... SO...

I have an unofficial escape plan...

Grab what I can in no more than five minutes, get the truck outta the garage.. through the door if necessary get on the beach, go like hell and get as high as possible as fast as possible!!!!!!!

There's actually even a bike path that cuts right through the lower part of high ground where there would be no traffic and it leads right to rapidly rising ground...

If I've underestimated the "TTL" (time to live) of the wave vs quake, mebbie my ol' chevy will be my "board"...

Chill Wills "Dr. Strangelove" -52 exit comes to mind here!

                                YaaaHoooo! YaaaaaaaaaaaaaHoo!
Spent a while in Longview when I was going to school in Portland. Went to Long Beach one weekend while I was there. Awesome area! You would have to move fast!
They are doing everything here from predicting it will die off to telling us to prepare for a 6.0 or better. I know we could'nt find bottled water at the local store on Sunday! Also, my wife took it upon herself to check and our insurance company has suspended the sale of earthquake insurance.
                                What will be will be.
