Great info, but I gotta tell ya that there's nothing like being awakened in your tent by the sound of an Unlimited starting up and going out for an early morning shakedown run. It's the best alarm clock there is!!

And in your bed, your food, your cameras, and places you did'nt know sand could go.
There's also the red ants, the porta-johns, the generators running constantly.
BUT, there's also the planes flying over all the time, and sitting out in the evening watching them while enjoying a cold few with friends camped around you that you see each year.
        Priceless.

                I think you missed one.

                It should read:

We've always camped out at St. Michael's Catholic Church on the grass, so the sand isn't as big of an issue.

Cripes, it's still 4 months away and I'm gettin' worked up just talking about it.

                      GSR Pylon Bar

Though the pylon bar is now gone, I will say that... the bar that is on the opposite end of the casino, over near the elevators, sort of just east of what was "Chevys" has "unofficially" become a place where folks cool their heels after a day at Stead...

If you wanna look at some pretty cowgirls, then the old Pylon Bar is still a viable place to drop a few bux.. (they are pretty damn cute!) but it is pretty loud for conversation, as was the other great (now gone) watering hole "The Garage"...

Looking at the half full glass-o-water that the GSR is. We have an aviation savvy owner, who along with being an owner/pilot of an aviation classic, is a close friend of a race team owner. That he's enough of a businessman to ignore his aviation roots to make the (what have to be hard) decisions to steer his club to profitability.. whether that be directly away from aviation roots or not.. really should not be something that we race fans lament about too loudly..

I'm really happy to see that some of you are as loyal to the GSR now, under completely new ownership, as you have been in year's past!

If you spent much time at the old Pylon Bar, and ever looked at it as a business.. reality would creep in pretty quickly!

Though we race fans come once or twice a year and fill the city, we don't come every day of the year, nor do we reach into our wallets with the reckless abandon that the "under 30" crowd does.. each and every night, all night long..

And this, is what a "bar" or "casino" owner needs to achieve the bottom line of making it work.. turning a profit..

Pylon Bar is gone.. long live the pylon bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Air Races are still alive... you guys are sooo into this sport, I know, all of you will support whomever supports our sport! However they wind up supporting it.. in public, or behind the scenes..

I have no direct knowledge of the inner workings but it's probably not completely unnoteworthy that more than a few of the race teams still call GSR home during race week and PRS! (and in-between for some!)

                          Nicely put, Wayne.

My wife and I spent our 5th wedding anniversary at that place when it was the Hilton. There was a pretty big snowstorm that weekend that slowed Reno to a crawl. The hotel gave us a couple of comped meals and some champaign in addition to making all of their blackjack tables into "single-deck" affairs. They were very nice in making our stay as comfy as possible, and we try to patronize whenever we're in town.

My last visit to the Pylon Bar was Sunday evening last year. Bob Button and crew were there celebrating his great landing in a wounded VooDoo during the unlimited gold.....he bought drinks all around several times for everyone present! Various other teams and crew were there also...it was a great last memory of that place! Thanks Bob!!!
