  • Mr. Awesome

I had the unique opportunity to spend some time with Si Robin, I happened to notice this photo on his wall. Thought I'd share it with you...

Wowsers! Looks like you'd want to do wheel landings, but can't.

        Cool picture.

I haven't seen Si in years. When I first moved to the valley, I was hanging out at Van Nuys one day and had the unique experience of flying with him. I don't know if he still does, but he used to take his plane (I don't remember the type other than it was built in 1930) and fly it once around the pattern. Then he'd land, clean up the plane and put it away.

Just the mention of his name brings back fond memories!

Is he the one that had the Bull Pup at the Rolls Royce heritage comp. at Reno last year? He mentioned flying it once around the pattern every so often and putting it away. If it was him, he is a nice guy. We chatted for a good hour on Fri. and I never got his name.

I see Si quite offten as I'm also based at Van Nuys. I know he has a red Stagger Wing and a Cub that he flys on a regular basis. He is a fun guy to talk with.

The 'Pup at Reno is owned by Ken Hetge based at Tehachapi CA. I talked with him for quite awhile one day and that airplane is a recent acquisition/restoration.

The reason for "flying it once around the pattern every so often and putting it away" has to do the reliability of the Szekely engine. As described to me several years ago (when I was in negotiations to acquire a 'Pup). "It's a great airport airplane. When you takeoff, keep it over the airport. It's not a matter of IF the 'Zeke will let you down, it's WHEN."

That's exactly what he told me. He also said cleaning up after an externally oiled engine isn't much fun either.

Ohhhh, nice pretty red X there Victor. Hang on... I'm thinking there's supposed to be an airplane there instead of the red x. Guess I'll have to wait `till I get home to see. Silly work computers won't let me see the pics.

I never once got to see Mr. Awesome fly. All though I never missed a year, it seemed by the time I arrived during the years it was at Reno, it had already either crashed or broke!
Sure looks like a racer in the old 30's style. Also looks like one heck of a handful to fly, all engine with just enough airplane attached to keep it pointed more or less in the desired direction. Anybody here know how it handled?

Who is Si Robin? A google search didn't turn up too much about him.

Skip Holm refused to fly the plane again after he encountered severe nose pitch up on the course. That was with the old tail though. Neil Anderson would be able to tell you how she flew with the T-33 unit. This is one bird that needs to get back in the air and to Reno!
