PIGGY-BACK in a P-38!!!
For those site-goers who've yet to check-out the new August 2008 issue of FLIGHT JOURNAL magazine, I highly-recommend picking up a copy.
Besides showcasing yet another great cover shot by ace air-to-air photog- John Dibbs (capturing POF's P-38J in its' previous 'PORKY II' scheme w/Mike DeMarino flying), this issue features a truly amazing cover article by author- Tom Cleaver that documents a brave WW2 P-38 piggy-back pilot rescue behind enemy lines in Romania that's a- 'must-read'!
It also reminded me of an archive shot I took back in 1980 of Gary Levitz giving his engine-builder & close pal- Jack Sandberg a piggy-back ride in his P-38 (N345 - Race #38). That was no mean feat either, as JRS was somewhat tall in stature!
I also recall Lefty Gardner taking up his crewman- Joe Harmon up for a piggy-back ride around the pylons in #13 White Lightnin' and getting it on film. I couldn't locate that slide, but here's the shot of Levitz & Sandberg together taxiing in at Reno/Stead in #38 on 9/9/80 & a circa Reno '78 shot of Levitz's N345, which I thought might be interesting to some folks.
