I'm not a racer but have a fair amount of engine experience.. to my ear, that sounded like the labored sound of an engine going south...

Just my almost worthless $.02...

This is an "I don't know, but I been told" thing.. but I've been told by more than one race pilot that the difference in when a raidal goes and a Merlin is completely understated when described as "dramaticially different".

Again, from what I've been told but also again, by a pretty well respected racer, when a Merlin goes in a Mustang, it's a "life changing experience"...

*Gulp*...

And we all thought having a blowout on the freeway was exciting!

And to think that watching that vid was bothersome to me. Don't think I've ever watched an onboard view when a Merlin has let go.

There was some in-cockpit footage circulating a few years ago of one of Tiger's dramatic Mayday's where he barely made the runway. Can't remember if the footage included the Merlin self-destruct sequence though. Someone must have that stashed away somewhere.

I believe that was from Skyfire. He just squeaks it on the numbers and the prop comes to a quick stop while coasting down the runway. It was funny how as soon as he got her stopped he was jumping out of the cockpit.
P.S. All this talk and video of Fury’s Fireworks has made me want to do her right, so with the permission of our other team member Tom Mills who shot some most excellent video from the VOS, I’ve uploaded the whole heat race from Saturday, so enjoy and crank it up.

Actually, i met the gang on Saturday during the bronze race. Sunday i was in the F'liners group on top of a trailer shooting stills. I had my wife strap the video cam to a fence post and shot the whole race from there for Sunday Gold.
