I know that the CAF had lots of mechanical problems with the airplane over the years, so perhaps this may be why it didn't stray too far from Texas. I only saw it at the Airsho gathering at Harlingen each year in the late 70's and early 80's. It might have gone to other shows, but I just don't remember seeing it outside the home turf.

As an aside, I still have a picture of myself and Gary Levitz, from the first time I met him back in the late 70's at one of the Airsho's. I also have a picture from when he let me sit in the cockpit of the Twin and make all kinds of cool airplane noises! A rare experience for sure!

I first saw it fly in about '77 and it crashed in '87, so it flew for at least 10 years, probably longer. Does anyone know when the first flight of the CAF's example was?
I was there and watched it crash. Looked to me like the pilot "landed" it about 30 feet above the runway. It fell like a rock.

Here is the official NTSB report on the crash:

Though the report doesn't mention it, I've heard from several people that the pilot got confused in mixing up his approach and landing speeds in this aircraft because it had an airspeed indicator that was in knots or mph, whichever was the opposite of what he was used to. The result was flaring it at the wrong airspeed, not adjusted for the airspeed indicator for that particular aircraft.

Awesome pictures! And yes, we understand about having to give "exclusitivity rights" to magazines. So which magazine will print your pictures and be first?

                  Thanks!
