  • Thunderbirds???

I noticed on the Air Race website, the schedule does not show that the Thunderbirds are performing on Sunday, is this correct? Just curious, thanks.

            Re: Thunderbirds???

They should really stay here and do a Sunday show for us. Wasn't it the last time they was here they left to go to Idaho for a military show and then lost an aircraft? I believe the pilot had failed to reset the altimeter to the fields elevation. And then during the show, I think it was a loop, the aircraft wasn't able to pull out...too low. The pilot was ok, but the aircraft was destroyed.

If I recall the story correctly, one of the solo pilots attempted a split ess on departure about 1000 feet below the appropriate altitude for that airfield. He stayed with the plane until the last possible moment to assure it didn't get into the crowd and control tower. I think I read somewhere that he punched out about 0.8 seconds prior to impact. There's an in-cockpit vid floating around the net somewhere but I haven't seen it in a while. Maybe on u-tube?
