I have no doubt that given enough money whole Merlins could be built.
Cosworth Engineering in the UK can draw an engine block & cylinder head casting on a CAD and then using process of 3 dimensioanlly acting lasers and special Casting Sand moulds turn the CAD drawing into a mould- just like that.
They could build an engine like a merlin in their lunch hour!- Case anyone doubts me have a look at their website

Course it does help if you have the Millions of £ that an F1 team has to spend on an engine
    BUT !
I think its better that there is a air of Wizardry and black arts to the whole unlimited racer programme keeps geeks like me interested, the skill in modifying 1940s technology to give huge power using hens teeth rare parts without resorting to full fly by wire VVT Wasted spark electronic engines is part of the mysteque that is unlimited racing!
    Long may it continue!
I too love these tech posts! Thanks to all for your input! Please keep it coming!

Wizardry and black arts. Sounds like a Harry Potter Unlimited is in the works.

                Re: Race Engine Question

I've made these comments before, fell on deaf ears.... but I'll make them again.

First off, understand Reno is more of a "Show" than a "Race". Racing imply's there is financial gain, which at Reno there clearly is not. Its a once a year "Hobby" race at best.

That understood, it seems the best way to provide the best and SAFEST show is to have some kind "overview" of the racers. Not in the Big Brother sense, but in the symposium sense.

Between the Doc and Kerch is where 90% of all the go fast knowlage resides... Its a fact, argue all you want.

It is also where the "dont saw your friggin' crankcase in half" info resides as well.

There are a limited number of engines available every year, and the number is on the decline. If teams allowed the brain trust to examine their programs, and make suggestions, it could only improve Reno.

                1. Better racing
                2. Decreased costs
                3. SAFER
                4. More planes running on Sunday
                5. Faster
                6. SAFER!!!
                7. More Fans

You get the idea. Nobody gets rich racing BAJA, as a result the racers band together . Reno needs to drop the ego and chest pounding and take a lesson from them.

Imaging 3 healthy Fury's ( ala' September Fury), 3 Healthy Stangs ( ala' Dago) and the Bear in the Gold final, all running in the 480's, all running till the end. (All examined by the Brain Trust too)

The planes exist, the pilots exist, the knowlage exists..... lets bring it all together.

                Let the flaming begin....

Let's not forget the indispensible Pete Law.

Airplanes can't go fast and run hard if their engines melt.

Yes, Pete's years in the trenches cannot be overlooked.... BUT..... he's doing the work I'm suggesting.

He goes from team to team, making sure all the ADI systems are set and functioning properly....

Without him, there would be allot of smoldering aluminum, fo' sho!
