  • Rookie Question

I just came across this forum and have had a great time perusing the boards, I must say that this seems like a great community here with l alot of good information.

I am looking forward to going to the Reno Air Races for the first time here in a couple of weeks and I have a couple of questions. First, my friend and I are each bringing our 2 year old sons, but we were wondering about how loud it is at the races and if ear plugs were recommended or necessary, or are you far enough away that the nose is not all that substantial. Secondly, a couple of years ago I got to take a ride with Dan Martin in Ridge Runner III and was wondering if anyone knew if he would be flying in Reno in it or another Mustang. Thanks in advance for your help.

My son is gonna be eight next week and has been going for the last four years. They need air plugs and especially since the Raptor will be here this year.

I agree with Will! I worked around industrial noise most of my life, and usually only wear ear protection when jets are flying. I'm looking at a $4,800. hardware bill from the audiologist as soon as I return from Reno!

I have constant ringing in my ears, usually louder than any car I'm in or even most airplanes... I can only hear very few bird chirps, can't hear crickets.. my lady has to repeat herself or I have to see her talk.. (lip reading??)

      You get the picture!

Personally, from the stands, I'd prolly let 'em hear the warbirds... at least once they are on the course.. at least for a little bit (just so they know) but for just about any modern military demo.. EAR PROTECTION MANDITORY!!! Especially Harrier, and THUNDERBIRDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Welcome to the forum!

Foam ear plugs at least for the T-6 races and some of the aerobatic performers.
They tend to run the props in a painfully noisy zone.

          Yes, bring ear protection.

I took my 19 month old daughter to the Gathering of Mustnangs in Columbus last year. (I was so excited about that being her first airshow.) As soon as the Aeroshell team went up and made a pass directly in front with the prop noise at full smash, she had a meltdown. The noise obviously created pain in her ears based on the screams. She was spooked from that point on and cried as soon as she heard an airplane.

My wife had to take her into a building to calm her down, and then leave the airport. Luckily I had other family there and got to stay. Had I not we all would have left. It was traumatizing for us all.

Ear protection upon arriving at the airport probably would have saved the day. Try to get them used to wearing it beforehand, and have fun at the races!

I hear you Wayne. I worked construction during the summer to pay for college and in an industrial setting for twenty years(General Mills Inc. Lab Tech). My ears are also kinda shot. Not to mention all the rock concerts! Ciao.
