A spokeswoman with the National Championship Air Races confirms to Channel 2 News that a plane has crashed at the Reno-Stead Airport.

It crashed Saturday morning around 9 a.m. in the middle concourse, Valerie Miller, with the air races, told Channel 2. There is no word yet on whether anyone has died.

Miller tells Channel 2 that the crash was not related to the air races, however. The races get underway on September 10th and run through the 14th.

Watch Channel 2 News at 6:30 and 11:00 for a full report, and count on www.ktvn.com to bring you updates as they become available.

I don't believe that it is related. That quote may refer to the tanker accident.

          Again...please no names or details.

Re: RGJ.com is reporting a plane down at Stead this morning

                Just got this from RGJ.com

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A pilot has been killed in a crash during a practice run before the start of the annual Reno National Championship Air Races.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the female pilot was killed Saturday morning at Reno Stead Airport when the wings of her homebuilt, single-engine plane broke off as she was performing a roll.
Gregor says race organizers were observing her as part of the certification process to allow her to perform in next week’s races at the airport just north of Reno.
The pilot’s name was not immediately released, but the plane was registered to a Nebraska resident.
Three pilots were killed in competition during last year’s air races. There now have been 19 fatalities in the 45-year history of the event.
The air races begin Monday with qualifying runs.
The 9 a.m. crash is under investigation by federal authorities.

My son-in-law works for REMSA, and he was notified that a plane was doing a roll when a wing came off. He was not sure if it was a racer or one of the aerobatic planes. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

I would like to thank everyone for helping us keep the information flow to a minimum during the very delecate relative notification process today. The instant news spreading made available to us via the net, puts everyone in the position of being responsible and thinking of feelings of the family and friends.

I'm sure I speak for all of you when I say we would never want a loved one to check in to see how their family or friend was doing and read they had perished, here, for the first time, perhaps minutes after the event.

This worked just like it should today and I truly do thank you all.

Prayers are on their way for her, her family, and for a safe air race event. We all agree we don't need another one like last year, ever.

I'll see everyone on Monday morning!
