For the record, Mr. Wayners has been spotted by reliable witnesses. I still have the scars from when he punched me in the elbow with his ribs last year, but that's another story. In any case, I will swear on the record I have seen him in the pits this year.
I think what I said to you was "can you get any wider" when I was trying to get up and get a shot of the Bear and crew.
For the record.. It's my job after all I simply HAVE to get those shots of the Bear and crew.. And a word to the wise when you are in the mob that presses against the crew and airplane after a win. EVERYBODY wants to and deserves to get a shot. The proper (read this, polite, professional way) to do this is, get in, get your shot and give someone else a break. Also, try to learn to shoot with your elbows DOWN so others can shoot past you.
So what was all the fire coming out of the top of the engine this evening. I heard it was a jug fire?? Are the going to have to pull one of the jugs tonight??
It was a "stack fire" partly due to the wind direction when they parked (wrong way) and partly because they do not have stack plugs that fit the new exhaust which would have snuffed it out immediately.
If you look closely at the bottom stack (easier to see in the cropped shot) you can see fire.. the problem was that all the smoke and heat was being blown forward by the wind.. Right after this shot, the crew turned her into the wind and all was well..
Ya know, normally I'm a Strega/Dago/any modified Mustang fan. But I do have to admit the new paint on the Bear is looking damn sexy! Rare Bear="Sexy fast"! The cowlings that I saw on monday still had the "Jack Frost/Taisty Freeze" flames from last year. Is that new paint, or new cowlings? They look fantastic, thanks for the pictures!!
What plane is the Bear's 4 blader off of? It doesn't look like a standard Bearcat prop. Also, does anyone know why they went from the 3 blader to the 4? The 3 blader looked like it had more blade area than 4 blader does. I know there's a lot of physics stuff involved in props and I don't understand it all.
I think the 4 blade is off a Skyraider, and the 3 blade prop doesn't allow the plane to turn well. Its faster in a straight line, but the plane won't turn with it (or gives up way too much speed through the turn). I think thats it in a nutshell.

Actually the three blade in addition to handling difficulties, put a throbbing harmonic through the airplane that Lyle and Penney both said they could feel in the rudder pedal feedback.
And I did not know they were owned by the same rich guy!
Having been around Rod Lewis during the negotiations for the purchase of Rare Bear from my dad, I would say the airplane is in very good hands, also having met so-called "rich guys" that hord their toys and don't share with the public at all. you can be thankful that that Rod spends his money for his toys in a way that brings the joy to others of being able to watch them fly. I knew of another guy that wanted to buy the Bear and just put her in his hangar retired from flight forever. Y'all got the better deal. Rod is a good owner for the Bear. Not as good a guy as the previous owner but then again I'm biased.

Well, hell, they should've been in the stands! We coulda' told them about the "throbbing harmonic" of the 3-blader!!

Red Bull has no earthly idea what "air racing" is.
