I get a kick out of comparisons as written above.. it's all fun when you write that sort of stuff but this is life-and-death we're talking about here, as well as the dreams and hard work of a LOT of people. Not to mention the... kinship that a lot of us have developed with the "Bear" as well as her crew and pilot.
Skip Holm will always be respected as one of the very best of the best. To my knowledge, he's never flown the Bear.. not that this matters, I'm sure, he'd do a good job of it.
But to throw out a statement as above, that he'd just roll her and be done with it, to my ears, is a supreme insult to an extremely competent pilot, one John Penney!
How many wins in this challenging airframe does John have to turn in before he gains the level of respect that he deserves???
Not trying to bash anyone, it just gets my goat sometimes when I read this sort of thing....
After listnening to John this afternoon talking with MR Bob Hoover. that was going tobe his next move.
He was out of options, and a single wheel landing in the soft dirt just was not in his plans. He said he was going to point it north and bail out if his G manoover didt make the geer drop into place. Thank god it worked!
I would love for John to come in and recant this story to us like he did last year with his end of race maybay.
it is one thing to hear it from someone who knows someone. but entirly differant when you hear it strait from the sticks mouth.

Wayne, take this in the sprit that is intended......
Skip has a larger than life, indestructable persona. The truth is that he's flesh and blood like all the Reno pilots.
Mr. Penny is a professional pilot, who owes his life to his ability to stay calm and work out several issues in a short amount of time.
The humor is in how I suggested Skip would have done it.... "His way...."
Rare Bear probably burned a piston, he landed under power and shut it down as he ran down the runway.
You know the last 4 times that RB flew, it maydayed.
Aint that something to think about?
Freekin Awsome Race today.

it didn't mayday Wednesday but it did every other time. My views of the Reno air races changed a bit this weekend. I can't imagine johns family if they could hear the dialog during his maydays. Every time the bear goes up it seems it's a gamble, a pretty big one. How can strap into a plane knowing that your gonna have to deal with a real mayday 9 out of 10 times. I could see john stepping down after this year.
