Nice to see you here a bit more again.

I agree Tsunami's crash was unfortunate....

Let me ask you this....how many fatal UL crashes have there been with planes that weren't one-off's. I'll wait.

      Red

      Hi Red,
Lynn Winney FG-1D 1965 practice for Los Angeles Air Races.
Bob Abrahms P-51D 1965 during race at Las Vegas Air Races.
Mike Carroll P-39Q 1968 Test flight prep for 1968 Reno Air Races.
Mike Geren F8F-2 1971 during US Cup 1000 mile San Diego Air Races.
Bud Fountain F8F-2 1973 during California Air Races Mojave.
John Sliker F8F-2 1975 ferry flight home from Reno Air Races.
Got really lucky with Steve Hinton in 1979.
Got really lucky with Kevin Eldridge in 1994.
Bill Speers P-51D 1994 practice for Reno Air Races.
Then there has been the three one offs.

There is a dangerous kind of racing, they do it with airplanes. Not sure where you were going with this Red, but there has been a long list of fatal accidents in factory warbirds.

        Thanks for the info stuntflyr

Not sure where I'm going with this either I see the last one was in '75...how many were wearing O2? How many of those were due to structural failure? And how many were just other things like the Speers incedent? Now I know Brickert's wasn't structural, but it was with non standard technology.

I guess my point is no matter how much I like the homebuilts, and want to see more...they give me some pause. Unfortunatly there are always likely to be crashes...I just feel that the homebuilts get a disporportionate share. I'll let you draw your own conclusions from that.

This deal has not been finalized yet, so we should all probably let the ink dry on the check before we start speculating the whole who, what, where, when thing. Once the exchange has taken place I am sure the new owners will be making some kind of announcement regarding the airplanes future.

Well said Dave. Do you have any pictures of her in the old days?

Here is a couple that I took back in 89. I personally liked this color scheme and configuration the best.

Just cause Jukka's native language is not "Engrish" and he's maybe a bit, left of center..

Guys like him have driven aviation since day one!

Who would have believed that two Bike mechanics would figure it out after all!

Would we have been lauding them with "go Wilber, Go Orivllle" had the net been alive? Or would we have been saying.. yea.. right..
Hey Wayner, if that sounded cynical, it wasn't meant to be. Juke mentioned before that he really liked that airplane, I'm sure he's got some ideas.
I've seen the spark of an idea start out as a sketch on a bar napkin, and end up as a flying airplane.
Who knows what can happen when two dreamers put their heads together. Spitballing! (Although I don't think that will translate that well...
P.S. Most of my American friends don't speak English that well, no knock there.....

LOL... sometimes, I think Jukka may be the best master of the language here!

                      Re: RACE 15 "Furias"

Juke probably picks his words much more carefully than a lot of us do!

                      If I remember correctly:
Lynn Winney flew into the ground during low-level practice away rom the field.

Bob Abrams had modified his mustang with no wing fillets. He stalled during an emergency landing and I've heard versions where the fillets are blamed.

Mike Carrol hit the tail on bailout. I'm not sure why it crashed, all I can find is "lost control" but it sure had little wings!

Mike Geren's bearcat shed a wing.

Bud Fountain's bearcat crashed after fire came thru the firewall.

Jack Sliker crashed on approach after running out of gas.

I don't see a pattern other than flying a high performance aircraft can be unforgiving. The list of warbird crashes is much longer than the list of racers. All of the "one off" crashes seem to be from wildly different reasons also.
                      No theory, just $.02.

Two strutural failures and a fire?

                          Re: RACE 15 "Furias"

MAII was structural. I guess Tsunami's could be as it was a flap part, but I was putting that down as a systems failure.
I guess you could say that Carroll's Kingcobra was so modified as to no longer be relative to a production aircraft also. Symantics?
Just seems that they cannot be attributed to any short series of common failures.

I don't remember, did Geren's have a fire before the wing failed?

                            According to the NTSB, yes:

I had read in an article many years ago that engine fire coming thru the firewall was a weakness of the Bearcat. Dunno.

I believe it was the magnesium accessory case catching fire, which burns at insanely high temps.
