  • Incredible mileage !

Japanese team has accomplished to go 3440 kilometres with just 1 litre of fuel.

Finnish team was 12th with 1450 km with a litre.

    ------------

I figure a 22 hp aiplane with 110 mph at 65% power would go 245 miles with a gallon. Possibly with 50% power 300 miles and 30% power 400 miles.

Well 200 km is the longest distance man has pedalled with a lite plane using 0,5 hp. The limit is somewhere there ...2-3 hp and plane 50 lbs...I say 1000 miles is doable with a gallon. I know it has been done already with a motored glider, but that is an another matter.

Here are the incredible human powered planes:

    japanese Coolthrust:

    and US Daedalos II:

It's a dream shared by anyone who has ridden a bicycle up a steep hill - human powered flight. NASA achieved this feat as part of the Daedalus project over a decade ago with the Light Eagle and Daedalus aircraft flying record breaking distances of 59km and 199km respectively. Designed and…

Lookslike the 100 km is the record ( not 200 km ).

      Re: Pheeef !

Crude oil is down now more than 50% what it was few months back. I guess the need for high mileage vehicles is lower now.

It is very concrete for me...I was banned now from an other site as well ( that makes third site that prohibits me from discussing my "bird" publicly ). Banning members is very rough for those who ( are being banned ) make lots of free work and try to present their advance just enjoyment for others..instead of " the giddy up ! " you get punished for hard nerve cracking CAD-drawing work...at least here in Finland.

      Gotta keep on moving.

I say the NEED is still there. At some point and time oil prices will go back up.

I must agree...it's not just a need, it's a must. Once the economy starts to turn around...the price of oil will start it's climb again. With winter coming, demand for home heating oil may even be a trigger for the price to head back north.

It may take the global economy to turn before oil start its rise again, but sooner or later people have got to realize that it's going to happen.

I think the need for high mileage vehicles is the future. Why not? I am not an engineer, but I am a zoologist, high mileage should result in less CO2 and other emissions. By the way Juke, I am really stoked on your TS2 design, it is a great concept.

                Thanks Frank,

That was a project of the whole air racing community here. I was just evaluating all possible factors that came across my mind and most of all trained to draw with AutoCAD. It is several years product.

Cost to build a racer like that must be fenomenal..unless an engineering team comes along and makes all the calculations for it free like I did this initial sketching. Of course there is a need for a person ( a fund raiser group ) who is willing to fund it and a pilot who has balls to fly it.

I have to admit after flying small R/C of 1/12 scale ( where TS 2 modelled now ) models that they are nerve cracking sometimes. I had lotsa joy with Me-109G:s and flying 2 Mustang models, but what really got my adrenalin high was a Zero where I placed a 3,5 cc ( 1,4 hp ) high performance OPS engine and a three blader prop that I cut the tips to get the higher pitch..damned I sweated like pig and the plane disappeared into clowd came down inverted and zoomed back and forth the sky before I even had a time to touch the throttle the engine quit and that Zero glided like a rock. I say it was about kilo in weight so I was actually flying a beast that had over 1/1 hp/kilo power to weight ratio ( RPMs somewhere 20 000 / min ).

There is a big change if I make an attempt with an OS CV-A .15 ( which I only bought for this model ) in TS2 that I'll brake the plane..now it is hanging on top off my TV in living room. The sorry ass AP that I tried on it couldn't even handle the toss and caughed every time I threw it into the air..and evidently there was lack of power in the engine ( there is not enuf pressure in the fuel tank via exhaust )..handful to keep it level till the touch down every time..pretty much like the F-104 that did not tolerate any trouble and before they had a 0-0 ejector seat it was also costly for the pilot. One day I will make that flight..with the model....real one ?...I don't think I can..and too old to learn how to. Only thing that kept the modelplane in tact was the structure that I tested to withstand +22 Gs by loading the wing with handweights..it is like solid wood, but weighs 850 grams..it is not much, but that slick foil and small wingarea makes it difficult to master with a poor engine.

But the OPS in Zero..it was paralyzing..like Thunderscreech with supersonic props..something you'll never forget ..a machine that can really kill you if not careful or at least cripple for the rest of your life..and yet fascinating. I do have deep scars in my elbow from a diesel engine that "accidently" fired at my hands..flying past me with a teststand into the wall. I was scared ****less and I was only 13 years old. Gotta be carefull with those models ( and real ones of course ).

                Happy Thanks Giving !

                  Re: Incredible mileage !

Here is another project that possibly inspired me in the design.

Late in 1942 finnish AF leaders realised that soviet planes were getting better and better and they were flying partially obsolete planes and a demand of a high speed interceptor was realised.

State AC company produced several layouts: the fastest VL Puuska( PM-3 ) is here:

I have seen a curve that indicated 720+ km/t topspeed for this design..armed with only 20 mm cannon and uses Me-109 G-2 spare engine. Very tiny in size.

Unfortunately the woodbinding technology was weak still and glues horrific. The flown version PM-1 had part falling in test flight.

                    Pics from my boneyard...TS2 today..

It seems to suffer from hanging on the roof.

Maybe I have to do something about it.

OS engine will double the output of the engine from 14 000 rpm to 18 000 region.

                    Weight 852 grams.

New power to weight ratio with OS 0.64 hp/kg..better than any WW II plane ( excluding racers ).

PS: See the paint from the hud on the vertical stab....all car paints don't seem to last very long.

                      Re: Incredible mileage !

                      Here is one more pic...

The frame is in scale with Mustang lenght.

Above shown TSII early model is also shown ( model plan profile ).

Easy to see how much I was able to shorten the model..did I take too much ?

Fuel unlike in Tsunami would be in the wings.
Tsunami would be the Bearcat size in lenght approx.

Model above by the window added. Oversized elevator was handy in the testflite attempt..there was enuf elevator to apply at low speed.

The wingtip Abrial 17 looking foil was also very effective at stall..it was fully in control in stall ( almost all starts ended the plane stalling to ground with weak engine that malfuntioned ).

Those engineless Galaxies would make splendid home for 100+ homeless and it would also look awesome. Or a restaurant...B-52 as a restaurant or a home..beats a trailer anyday.

I have seen those boneyards in google earth too. Pretty impressive in a way. There are 26 AF:s still flying Mig-21s according to Wikipedia ..many would be interested to buy a used F-15s and F-16s I bet.

Me drawing Tweedy/Phoenix/Max series eco planes in a Locheed Galaxy in the field somewhere and running an architects office at a same time. I would have to give people tickets to get in to see it and make money just off that.

I realize there is one big obstacle..to fly it to my field would not only need lotsa pilot skill, but it would also cost enermously.

                          Strongly OT.

How about the SKUNK WORKS ( Boeing ? ) Pelican...ground effect transporter...coming up soon ?

I have been contacted by the official of the finnish mileage competition and he clarified following:

Japanese team Fancy Carolin world record at 4079 km/l, Hiroshima 2004.

Best european team La Joliveriella, 3790 km/l, Rockingham England 2003.
