Reno NCAR/ULTD Qualification & Practice - Mon. 9/9/85:
Pilot John Penney drives Lyle Shelton's Race #77 RARE BEAR down along the fast West Chute (a.k.a. - "Valley of Speed") past the Guide Pylon. Race #77 qualified in 7th-position @ 429.485-mph in a very fast Unlimited Class entry field. John won Thursday's UNLTD HT-1A @ 407.502-av/mph ahead of Lloyd Hamilton in his Super Sea Fury - Race #15 FURIAS, even with a cut of Pylon 2 on the Pace Lap.
The next day's UNLTD HT-2A saw Rare Bear pullout of the race on Lap 6, and for the rest of Reno '85. It wasn't the year for The Bear, but the big roundy radials prevailed w/Steve Hinton winning Sunday's Unltd. Gold Championship in the POF #1 Super Corsair over Neil Anderson in #8 Dreadnought Super Sea Fury.
