Re: blue angels at reno 09

I wonder why they don't clear the sage brush from the shoulders of the runway. Mabey 100 feet on both sides. It might cut down on fire hazard and perhaps could have saved Blue Thunder from burning down. A tractor or bobcat would make short work of that.
My heart starts beating again in September.

My two exposures “behind the scenes” with the Blues is that they are a bunch on prima donnas---amazing pilots none the less and I don’t discredit their flying abilities at all. At Reno 2000 (or maybe it was 1999?), they were threatening not to fly if RARA didn’t take down the home pylon. An agreement was reached in the 11th hour, but can you imagine the delay in the show while crews disassemble the pylon and then re-assembled it? Hopefully it will be smoother this time. For a brief while I was affiliated with the Museum of Flight here in Seattle which plays host to the Blues for Seafair and the hoops they have event organizers jumping through is nothing short of incredible. They do put on a great show and the crowds love ‘em, but my hats off to the folks who have to work with them on the ground!

Now for a bunch of k’nooks, they guys can fly!

I just hope they don't do engine start-ups while there are races going on!
According to an article in the Reno-Journal-Gazette, even they don't know if they will be based at Stead or over the hil at Reno Int.

"A pair of Blue Angels pilots, Lts. Amy Tomlinson and Ben Welborn, touched down Thursday at Reno-Tahoe International Airport in one of the squadron's trademark blue-and-gold F/A-18 Hornets, as part of a two-day visit to the area to prepare for the team's return in September.

"We're here to figure out for the air races are we going to fly out of Reno Stead or are we going to fly out of Reno International? Where is it safest to put our jets?" Tomlinson said outside the Nevada Air National Guard terminal. "We show up with about 90 people in a big C-130 (transport plane), so we just want to know where we're going to be and what to expect."

I don't think I've seen them fly in/out of Stead since they stopped using the A-4, though I did miss some air race seasons in the 90's.

It's not just the Blue Angles. I got to work behind the scenes at an air show a little while back. Lot's of hoop jumping going on for some of the pilot's/team's.

Hey DOGGe... didn't the Blues fly out of Stead within the last, maybe 5-7 years? I remember photos I took, maybe even as long ago as 2000... I'm almost sure..

              Help??

Oh yeah, I check the archives and the Blues visit was in 2000. They were based out of Stead. In fact, at show time on one of the days, one of the jets had trouble on start up and had to scrub. The pilot jumped out and into the backup plane and rolled out before the rest of the flock could circle the airport once and rejoined like nothing happened. It was actually amazing how quick it all happened and most people didn't even catch that there was a problem. Quite amazing.

That's the same year Fat Albert started the brush fire with the JATO demo. Best part of the show. As for all their start-up pageantry, I find it to be a very useful intermission, suitable for beer rental and returns.

An little bird came and spoke to me and told me another reason for lack of use of JATO is the possibiltiy that those little solid rocket bottles are not made anymore. While I do not know for certain, it is worth some thought. If they are no longer made, I can see why they would choose to use them at only select venues, those really really special shows.

                        Just a thought...

That was also the year they set up a little VIP viewing area in front of the ramp seating (general admission) complete with chairs, carpet and people who didn't care about airplanes walking around in front of the crowd. it was gone by Sunday as I remember.
