Of the available nose cases, it's simply the right (or best available) ratio to run the engine/propeller RPM at. They call it a "Slow" nose case because it spins the propeller slower, thus reducing the propeller tip mach. More or less, the most effective means available to get the horsepower to the propeller.

No, the gear was a nice used original drive gear that I had for the nose case. Out of my collection of parts that I had accumulated over the years. The only part of an EA-2 Nose case that I still have is a data plate.

The 988TC18EA-2 Nose case was developed for the L1649 Constellation series of airplane, of hich they made 44 aircraft plus spares. You can see it was a low production even when new item. For us it allowed the engine RPM to be run up and make more horsepower without taking the propeller tips past the limit where they effectively become drag, and inefficient instead of a thrust producing device.

Yes another case could be made better. However, there are many other phones ringing that need to be answered first.

Looks like while I was responding Mike Luvara answered also so you get two answers for the price of one question.

And for the same reasons Darryl Greenameyer used a -44 nose case for the R-2800, which I understand was also a low production item. I wonder how many of those are left?

I may be wrong but I thought the R2800 was one of the most produced engines in WW2.

            Corsair, Thunderbolt, Hellcat, Bearcat

            What else?

RIGHT, but... um, no. I was referring to the nose case from the R2800-44 variant, which was produced for the AJ/A-2 Savage, of which only 143 twin-engined airframes were produced.

There are no dumb questions only dumb answers. We all learn on this forum thanks to Wayne & company. June is almost here & then we will get plenty of questions/answers. Stay tuned.

When I was actively instructing I liked telling my students that there was no such thing as a stupid question... only stupid people asking questions. I was just joking of course (most of the time that is).

Funny thing about making new gears and hardened components.
Sometimes it isn't always as easy as it sounds.
Probably new gears would be perfect.

But some of the processes and materials that were made back in those days were pretty darn good. Some of the art is lost.

I imagine making new Merlin cranks or 3350 Master Rods would be a Whopping challenge these days.

                      Kudos to the old folks.
