A SBD-5 Dauntless lost in lake Michigan in 1944 was brought up intact.
I like these stories, saving our old warbirds.

Yes, great story isn't it! There has been a change in leadership and consequently policy at the Naval Historical Center, which is the organization responsible for all worldwide submerged U.S. Naval objects. Expect to see more of these aircraft from Lake Michigan surface in the future. There's lots of exciting things still down there, like another Vindicator, a "Bird-cage" Corsair, and possibly a few Hellcats, as well as the numerous Wildcats and many, many more Dauntlesses. Finally, the NHC has come to it's senses!
