Not as noisy as the MIG-21 that blasted out of Stead Wednesday afternoon! We really wanted him to take a turn around the pylons, but....

Or, if you ever get to stand on the ramp when a CASA Saeta starts up -- it's damned PAINFUL! I think it's powered by dog whistles.

I thought the Venom was powered by the Rolls Viper engine, same is in the "super" L-29s. The Viper is an axial engine, was used on the DH-125 business jet among other planes built in the 1960s. I could be wrong about the engine in the Venom. The Vampire was an earlier less powerful version of the Venom, as was said a lot of wood in their construction.

I was told at PRS that the PRS bird is actually a Swiss made all metal version of the Vamp. Of course I was repeatedly told that it is a Venom, which I am sure is incorrect. I'll check over on WIX -- there will be many over there who will be able to set us straight.

Whatever it is, it looked great on the pylons...

yes it was swiss....the lower front nose is still wood....it has 'hot' seats...nene engines are VERY noisy...yes it does use a LOT of runway as it takes a bit to get it up to speed.....at speed it climbs quickly and handles pretty well.....I'd like to see a sea venom in the field.....remember the plane doesn't have to qualify-just pass tech inspection, the pilot does have to exhibit his abilities and qualify for racing.

I think the NENE is a centrifugal engine but I seem to recall somewhere a Viper powered one. Anybody know?

It is a Vampire. The Venom had a thinner wing and a straight trailing edge. This one certainly looks tapered to me. Rad the Brit

It might just be me, but I thought it rounded the course a little tail heavy. If anyone could explain why I would appreciate it. Perhaps rudder size or due to twin tail?

I say it is a de Havilland DH 115 Vampire trainer (Vampire MK 55 perhaps). An offshoot of the original DH 100 Vampire, 804 were built and it was (originally) powered by a DH Goblin engine. The Goblin, designed by Frank Halford (Gipsy, Sabre), was a one-sided centrifugal engine originally known as the H-1. As a side note, the Goblin engine that powered the first Vampire (9/43) was the same engine that powered the first XP-80 (1/44). The original Vampires had a wooden fuselage pod of similar construction to the Mosquito, but aluminum wings, booms and tail. Don't know what engine this one has or how much wood was used in the trainer version. That's my guess.

I certainly hope the Vampire, Warhawks and Corsair are all back in Sept.
