20 years ago....feels like yesterday when I read about it.

Funny but didn't the last M ( or J ) model of T-bolt go way beyond 500 mph already in 1945 ( and faster than the Willy Messerschmitt / Fritz Wendel racer ) ? Also H-model Mustang was way faster than prewar Me-109R.

Wendels official FAI record was broken by Greenamyer also in F8F.

John Slack... In a couple of your last stories you mentioned a couple of your Racing Legends Pals from another type of Racing who later came to your world... I was around Dave Zuechal and Randy Scoville in their Drag Racing Days...Boy!!! They got it done no matter what the rules or regulations were... Hell , a lot of rules hadn't been needed or created yet because nobody had done or tried to do the things they/you did until you guys came along and had need and weren't afraid to just do what you needed to do... The Z-man and Don Moody, Muldoon and Randy, they got the passion and Love of flying then and the Frog Pond and Long Beach missed out... I got the Indy 500 bug and came to Indy... many many more were well before their Time.. I'm sure glad I got to be around and witness and raise a little hell in the good times...you gotta be in your 70's+/- to have experienced these times...Dave had a German Sheperd he really cared for..took him to the drags, Rommel was his name ...Dave had me paint a big painting for him of Rommel... I later got to Reno a few times before Dave and Randy passed... Some "Gone, but not forgotten" Hero's from another time...rb

I turned fifty in January, I had the priveledge of having a dad that took me everywhere. When I turned 12 I asked Dave Zeuschel about engines and he lit the fire, he talked to a twelve year old kid for about two hours at the Apple Valley Airshow, Memorial day weekend 1971. I met and talked with Zeuschel and Scoville as a kid, I got to meet and talk with the Dooner, Donovan, Isky, Smokey Yunick, Quinn Epperley, and got to cut my teeth with great Mel Gregoire. I was able to crew with an astonishing amount of Talent on the Rare Bear prject alone. I had the priveledge of working for Dave Zeuschel and Dwight Thorn.

All in all it has been good, there have been times when life went down a road unplanned. At one point in time my goal was to be a stock broker. Lots of street racing also.

Thanks for the story John. When is your book coming out? Seriously though, you tell a mean story.
You'll get your chance, smart guy!

Brad Haskin and I have discussed a book, there are a couple of people that have said they would like to hear more from inside the pit rope stories. But the KC-97 story is off limits Brad.
