    Re: Official... Stevo Wins!

They(Kerch) was doing a leakdown on the left bank when I left.

Word was, it was still running and had oil pressure when he shut it down and the prop still turned freely(no major internal nasties).

Here's a quote from "Gentlemen You Have A Race", Reno 1978

"Steve Hinton's victory would herald not only the beginning of further change in the sport technologically, but it would also herald the entrance into competition of a whole new breed of highly competitive and competent younger pilots who would make their mark indelibly over the years that would immediately follow. By winning this race, Hinton became the youngest man ever to win a Thompson Trophy or Unlimited Championship race. He was just twenty-six."

A great race, but pretty touching also as Steve senior (wasn't his brother in the back seat also?) in the pace plane buzzed Jr. while he was taxiing in. They then spent several minutes doing lazy circles and a few rolls with smoke on while his son arrived in victory circle. What a fairy tale week for that family.

What prouder moment for a DAD (especially in the biz.)
And the kid worked all the way from the shop broom to Strega's Cockpit.
            Big Congrats to "The Kid".

Tiger's first was Sept 20, 1987 so it's apropo that Steve O repeats that feat with his first win 22 years to the day later. As we left the field I looked up in the sky and saw that Steve sr had painted a big O with the smokewinders. Totally cool!

Yep. John was riding shotgun to act as a second set of spotter eyes and to cheer on his talented nephew from above.

Blower issues.. the motor held together. Answer to another question "Who built the VooDoo motor?" THEY did! L.D. told me that this was the first motor that Frank had built... the Merlin, once again, seems to have a future!

John was overheard saying when Steven pulled up and they formed up on him, a big fist pump came out from the cockpit!

                      Gotta love it!

Didn't hear about this. Was it after the race ended?

Yes and JP taxiied in under power so, it must have been minor.

Steve Stavro***(SP?).....teased him a bit about not being able to land without calling in a mayday.

Stevo was standing on the wing and looking around like he just got hit by a truck. Huge smile, but a bewildered look in his eyes.

I said to him, "you look nervous!"

He looked at me and said "I'm not, usually"

Congrats Tiger, Stevo, and the rest of the crew. You set a pace that none could match. A well earned win.

I am glad Stevo got over his butterflies. He almost put the gear struts through the wing on friday and had a little trouble finding the course on Saturday, but locked it down and nailed it on Sunday.

All in all it was a good, safe year.

I think it's also great that Strega graces the cover of this years calendar. Congrats to Stevo!!!

Congrats to Stevo and the Strega crew........great job flying the course. Glad everyone had a good safe flight. I see someone else saw that landing on Friday...kinda scared me there for a few seconds. Was going a little fast when he let the tail down and she started flying again. He made a good recovery.....enough power to recover, but not to much to torque roll her.......signs of a good pilot. We all can misjudge at times......a good pilot will accept it and use proper techniques to correct it.......as was the case on Friday.

PS: Congratulations to everyone, was a great year of racing. Sorry about the F1 crash, but glad he walked away. Any word on what happened?
