As I recall, it took some time in finding a replacement tire & the F-100 was on grounded status in the static display ramp during Reno '04 event dates.

I believe it is still at Stead if I remember correctly.

        "Racers-of-the-Past" - * International Formula One Class *

Tue. 9/9/80- Reno NCAR/Stead Field- #97- Ol' Blu

Another one of my favorite Formula One Class raceplanes (again, not one of the fastest) was the Minges Special M-30 Race #97- "Ol' Blu" (N97RM/N97RJ)...

Ol' Blu was designed & built by the late Richard Minges, who utilized some parts from the 1949 Cleveland Goodyear racer- #97 Denight Special "D.D.T." (N9059H/N9700). In 1970, Ol' Blu made it's debut w/Minges as race pilot for that year & at the '71 Cape May air races (where Dick died in a mid-air collision racing his T-6, in air racing history’s most-tragic event).

Going through my old NAG Rags & RARA Reno results database, here's a brief thumbnail summary of #97 Ol' Blu's racing history by pilot (-most-likely not a concise event list f/this raceplane):

Richard Minges- Ft. Lauderdale '70, Wilson '70, Reno '70 & Cape May '71

        Thurman Rock- Cleveland '71, Reno '71(DQ), Wilson '72 & Washington '72

        Don Kohler- Reno'76

        Simon Willbourn– San Diego ‘87

        H.W. (Rocky) Jones- Reno '80-'83-'84-'85-'86-'87-'88 & '89, San Marcos '80, Corvalis '81, Petersburg '82, Richland '86, San Diego '88, Albuquerque '88, Newport News '88, & finally New Braunfels ‘90 Texas– where Jones & #97 were also lost in a mid-air collision during a race on 7/7/90.

        I’d much-appreciate any additions/corrections to this list from site-goers.

          "Hounded by Hawkers!"

          Race: Sun. 9/18/05-Reno NCAR-UNL Gold-

Approaching the turn at Outer 4 Pylon on Lap-1 of Reno 2005's Sunday showdown for the Unlimited Gold Trophy- John Penney & Race #77-Rare Bear appears to be holding a narrow lead, while being dogged by a six-pack of hungry Sea Furies led by Brian Sanders flying #8-Dreadnought.

Sanders' SF "gang members" in this hot pursuit air racing rumble included-

Stewart Dawson flying his #105-Spirit of Texas, Hoot Gibson in Mike Keenum's #99-Riff Raff, Nelson Ezell in Howard Pardue's #13-Fury, Bill Rheinschild in his #117-Bad Attitude, Dan Vance flying Michael Brown's canary #911-September Pops & a 7th Sea Fury flown by Fred Cabanas- #103-Conch Fury (-not included in photo).

Dan Martin & his faithful P-51D #20-Ridge Runner III were also involved in this mix during the start, but pulled-out on Lap-3 w/engine troubles.

Penney pushed-up The Bear's throttle & left the fray behind him to win his team another UNL Gold Trophy, flying a 466.298-average speed 8-lapper final, against closest pursuer- Brian Sanders in Dreadnought in 2nd @ 448.825-av/mph. 9 of 10 Sea Furies entered for Reno '05 showed-up that year to race, w/Mike Brown's potent contender- #232-September Fury staying home w/engine issues.

"OH YEAH!" Regarding the collective sound of seven 'wicked-up' R-3350s (including #103 Conch Fury just behind the gaggle of racers in the pic) & a corncob, -maybe something akin to TWO race-prepared FIFIs making a low-level high-speed close formation pass!!!

You know what that picture is missing? Sand. I realize it's Saturday, not Sunday...but I can't see those three planes and not think about that damn sandstorm that blew through Sunday afternoon...and the paint sand-blasted off the leading edges and props afterwards.

For those interested in the history of this legendary WW2 Luftwaffe jet fighter, here's a few links to check out:

After WWII, "Watson's Whizzers" returned a handful of German Me-262s to the air, ushering in the U.S. jet age.

The Luftwaffe Resource Center's goal is to provide technical and historical information so that people can better understand the aerial conflict in World War II.

                                *** Alaska Snow Goose ***

                                Westflight Aviation Grumman JRF-6B Goose N72PR (s/n-1164)

Early this morning, we awoke to see a beautiful fresh snow-covered Alaskan winter landscape, much-like the one pictured in these vintage archive photos from New Year's Eve morning back in 1981. That morning I drove out North to Ketchikan's Peninsula Pt. Seaplane Facility to get some photos of snowbound seaplanes there, including Westflight's venerable Goose. While snapping pictures, WF company crewmen- pilot Max Lukin (on wing) & A.J. Slagle arrived for snow-removal duty & engine warmups to ready their amphibian for the day's scheduled flight ops.

In 1986, this particular old Goose got smart, and migrated to warmer climes: New Guinea & her current home in Australia & also worked for a time in Fiji. She starred in the remake of the movie- South Pacific. She's got alot of great military & commercial flying history in her logbooks.
