                            " Very Close Call & Big Lucky Break!". . . . . . . .

This past Sunday's (7/10) spectacular Duxford Airshow Skyraider/P51 mid-air collision during execution of a LH peel-off break fm a 3-ship formation pass, and Mustang pilot-Rob Davies' amazing low-level bailout (w/the damaged AD landing safely & no injuries to either pilot or spectators) -really generated world-wide media attention.

That same afternoon up here in Alaska, a Piper Navajo & a Cessna 206 floatplane flying directly towards each other through narrow Lake Clark Pass suffered a mid-air & both damaged aircraft landed safely afterwards in Anchorage (-the Piper w/9-aboard @ Merrill Field & the C-206 w/4-pass. @ Lake Hood seaplane base).

A mid-air collision in which no one's injured w/both planes able to land safely is one of the rarest-of-events, and it brought to mind one such example that happened during Reno '97 Unlimited qualifying (Tues-9/9) between Howard Pardue's Hawker Sea Fury & Sam Richardson's Yak 11-"Czech Ride", which some air race folks might recall. My friend & fellow air racing historian/author- Gary Williams describes the details in his excellent book series-AIR RACING RESULTS as follows, to go along w/a few Buck Shots photos:

"Howard Pardue (#66) was on his qualifying run heading to Pylon #4 when Sam Richardson (#29) called-in f/a timed-lap & dropped down onto the course near Pylon #6, just about the time Howard got there (see photo). It's apparent that neither saw the other for Howard continued on to complete his lap, landed, and returned to the pits to find he had prop tip damage. Sam pulled up high & found his Yak was damaged but controllable. After a safe landing, Sam realized his vertical fin was damaged & he was missing fully half of his rudder!"

Pardue was able to qualify 5th-fastest @ 407.048-mph & successfully-managed to race in all his UNL heats & Sunday's Gold-w/a Yak victory score mkg. painted in the appropriate place on the LH fuselage.

Unfortunately f/Richardson & his crew,-they had to work all during race week repairing his chewed-up v.fin/rudder assy. by installing a unit obtained fm a Yak owner over in Carson City (if my memory's still working ok).

The Monday (9/15/97) departures day photos show Nelson Ezell warming up HP's Sea Fury (w/victory score) & Sam's response painted on Czech Ride's rudder.

That was a miracle aerial encounter 4 sure & we're all really glad for that!

I have this whole incident on videotape as I too was standing out near the guide-pylon on "the road", and it really is a voilent impact as that poor little Yak gets tossed about the sky pretty hard. Sam did a great job saving it, that's for sure...
