    Re: 'BUCK SHOTS'

'JUST LIGHT IT' & - GO!!!

Race: Sun. 9/17/00- 1st Reno NCAR JET Class Gold (Demo)- E. Guide Pylon...

Who could ever forget the wonderful exciting time Jimmy Leeward decided put his silver Mig-17 into after-burner, to come from behind & shoot thru 'the pack' (-Randy Howell & Jerry Gallud in the two red Stoli Mig-17s, Steve Hinton in the POF T-33 & Rick Vandam in the L-39) -to win Reno's first Jet Class Demo Race?!

That was- 'A Big No-No', of course (one of the Stoli Migs did it briefly too) & the stunt earned him a- 'DQ', but Jimmy had the crowd of spectators on their feet screamin' for more!!!

That was awesome! I've been dying to see a photo of that quality for years. That was one of the coolest things I've still ever seen.

"Hey Skip!- You're gonna havta slow it down a bit now, for me to keep up, ok?..."

RENO/Stead Field, NV- Tue. 9/18/90: TSUNAMI test run

Race/test pilot- Skip Holm takes up John Sandberg's custom Boland-designed Unlimited Class racer- Race #18 TSUNAMI for a test run around the racecourse at speed, accompanied by the late & great- Rick Brickert flying his RED KNIGHT T-33 as chaseplane.

Photos (L-R): The first photo shows Holm running-up #18 on Mon. 9/17/90, w/crew chief- Sam Torvik standing-by, followed w/two shots of the Tuesday run-approaching old Outer 6 Pylon & going by the West Guide Pylon on the 'V-O-S', then a Fri. 9/18/92 taxi profile of The Red Knight w/Brickert at the controls & Steve Hinton riding in back, & lastly- John Sandberg debriefing Skip Holm ("Skip- How 'bout we go over those performance numbers one more time...?")

            "RIVAL PURSUITS" - Me-109 vs. Yak-9

Looking back to Reno '02 NCAR- One of my favorite highlights was seeing Skip Holm's surprise Stead Field arrival- flying-in Harold Kindsvater's Hispano HA-1112 Buchon (NX109W) to park on the ramp alongside the Russian Yak-9UM flown (& raced as #104) by Dave Morss. Talk about a great warbird photo op moment (no hesitation there)!

Of course, it was just about everyone's hope to see Skip race the Messerschmitt around the pylons (against former 109 adversaries, including the Yakolev), but it wasn't in the cards. Recently, effective on November 18, 2009 Kindsvater's Buchon N-# registration was cancelled following the fighter plane's export to Germany.

                  OK , Bearclaw -

Here's a ramp shot of Race #18 TSUNAMI from Sunday, 9/13/87, before the start of qualifications- w/Steve Hinton as pilot. It was #18's sophomore year racing in the Unlimited Class & Hinton qualified her in 2nd-place @ 464.649-mph (just behind Bill Destefani's new Q-record speed of 466.674-mph flying his P-51D #7 Strega-the year of Tiger's 'clean-sweep & innaugural Reno Unltd. Gold victory). Hinton & TSUNAMI dropped out of Saturday's UNL HT-3A w/a DNF, & then suffered a gear collapse during landing.

"The Difference Between FIRST & Second-Place..."

                    Reno NCAR - Sunday 9/15/91:

In all sporting events- winning by finishing first is the goal everyone is shooting for. The difference between first & second place is sometimes measured in fractions of an inch or a second in time. In Air Racing, it's no different - speed & timing are ultra-critical, along w/strategy.

Here's a selection of archive photos from Reno '91, when Lyle Shelton & #77 Team Rare Bear won the Unlimited Gold Championship 8-lap Final at a new record speed of 481.616-av/mph, ahead of Bill 'Tiger' Destefani's P-51 #7 Strega (478.680-av/mph) & Skip Holm in the custom-built #18 Tsunami (478.140-av/mph). In fact, all three of these top Unlimited contenders broke the existing race speed record in this event- running 'pedal-to-the-metal' -while using everything they had under the hood, in what's still often referred to as- "The Dream Race" in Unlimited Class Competition.

These- 'living B&W' pics fm Sunday night's RARA Awards Banquet show 1st-place winner- Lyle Shelton on stage w/race announcer- Sandy Sanders & both Official Air Race Hostesses- Ms. Jennifer Eckert (Miss Reno '90) & Ms. Amanda Allman (Miss Reno '91-w/crown), receiving his awards on behalf of his team & saying a few words of thanks & appreciation to the crowd in attendance.

Second-place finisher- Tiger Destefani is also shown on-stage receiving his trophy as well, & uses his custom-silkscreened shirt to boldly-emphasize his point to the audience: that the differences between First & Second-Place are truly- 'vast & profound', before tippin' his cap & sauntering off-stage.

Thanks to all who took time to post your kind words of appreciation!

Hi Mark- It was a great surprise to get your post especially, being that it's been way too long between contacts & know you've been sorely-missed at the races & online. Thanks for your thumbs-up!

While digging through the photo archives recently, I came across these Circa-Reno '82 shots of a famous Van Nuys-based warbird airshow action group, that's still going strong today- the always colorful & exciting:

                        + C-O-N-D-O-R + S-Q-U-A-D-R-O-N + -joining forces w/the CAF's magnificent B-17G- "Sentimental Journey" & her P-51D escort for a bold formation Stead fly-by on Saturday, 9/19/82

Hey Bucky - made me smile reading your post. I'll be here much more often in the future. Things have been keeping me away - but those things will soon no longer be an issue. I finally got out of the web hosting/design business to be able to have more time to enjoy my hobbies, spend more time with the family, and do personal web projects. I do have one more site to design (the money was just too good) but then I'm done building websites for $$ (unless it's big $$$$$ LOL). Now that I'm having to actually think about what I'm going to do in retirement (a few years away - but still - right around the corner) I've started to take the steps needed to make sure I'll be staying busy doing what makes me happy. Anyway - we do have a lot of catching up to do - and I'll be calling you in the very near future to do just that. You still at the same # ain't ya?

BTW - here's another for those last 3 shots - very nice sir.

The Great Reno Balloon Races are ALWAYS fun & full of surprises!!!

This wonderful 4-day annual event takes place every year @ beautiful Rancho San Rafael Park during the weekend prior to the start of Reno Air Race week, and offers spectacular colorful photo ops & special social happenings each day. But, gettin' up early to be there before the sun comes up, is a must-if you don't want to miss out on all the action!

My favorites are the many cool special shapes balloon designs, like this clown fish!

BTW- The Reno Air Racing Assn. & The Reno Air Racing Foundation each usually sponsor balloon entries & on Sat.-Sun. mornings, RARA also sends over a T-6 fly-by formation, to coincide w/the official balloon race opening ceremonies & playing of the National Anthem prior to the mass ascension by more than a hundred hot air balloon ships.
