      "The Mighty Jug!" ~

1- Sun. 5/17/09-Planes of Fame Airshow-Chino, CA: Warbird pilot-Mike DeMarino taxis-in POF's P-47G (N3395G). Republic Aviation’s famous P-47 Thunderbolt was the largest, heaviest, and most-expensive single-engine production fighter of WW2 & 15,686 were built. Nicknamed~ 'The Jug', it flew combat in both the ETO & Pacific, and was the mount of Hub Zemke's famous 'Zemke's Wolfpack'/56th Ftr. Group in Europe. Armed w/eight .50-caliber machine guns & as a fighter-bomber, a fully-loaded P-47 weighed up to 8-tons & could carry over half the bomb weight of a B-17! The big & mighty T-Bolt was also renowned f/it’s rugged reputation of being able to withstand a tremendous amount of combat battle damage & still remain airworthy to bring home her pilot. POF's rare 'Razorback' P-47G (AAF#42-25254) is painted-up to represent the mount of famous WW2 8th USAAF Ace- Col. Walker M. 'Bud' Mahurin (63FS/56FG): P-47D "Spirit of Atlantic City, NJ (AAF#42-8487). Mahurin scored 21V's during WW2, flying combat in both the ETO & Pacific Theater. Mahurin also earned 3.5V's flying F-86 Sabre Jets in Korea.

2- 'Warbird Fighter Pilot'~ Mike DeMarino looks-out fm his lofty cockpit perch, ready to fly Planes of Fame Air Museum's ultra-rare 'razorback' Republic P-47G Thunderbolt (N3395G)-Sat. 5/16/09.

3- "Thunderbolt!"~ Sat. 5/16/09-Planes of Fame Airshow-Chino, CA: POF's big bad WW2-era Republic P-47G Thunderbolt pursuit fighter makes a dramatic low flypast f/the crowd, w/pilot-Mike DeMarino at the controls.

Note: The last time we saw a rare pylon-racing appearance by a Thunderbolt was @ the '95 Phoenix 500 Air Races. It sure would be a treat to see a P-47 back in competition once again someday in the future!

Probably taken not too long before the "off runway excursion" sidelined her for many years. I've been to nearly every PoF airshow since 1986 and, though I'm sure there must have been more, I can only recall one time that the Jug was not on the tarmac. I look forward to seeing her every year. Now if they would only bring it up to the same standard of authenticity as the TFC Jug that would be the icing on the cake.

As long as you're talking about P-47's, here is a nice example from Paul Allen's Flying Heritage Collection. These were taken at General Aviation Day on May 9th, 2009.

Event pins are also popular on hats too, f/the same purpose.

Most of these mighty Vee-engined heavy-metal thoroughbreds have all now come 'n gone, but our exciting memories of their amazing fast-galloping competitive showings out on the Unlimited racecourse during years' past live-on & everyone has their own favorite steed...

Thanks to all the caretakers, pilots & crew, who fielded these beauties over the years making modern-era air racing history with them, while running against their 'Big Roundy' rivals.
