Thurs. 9/11/80- Reno NCAR/Stead Field- #38 Flying Dutchman

In my humble opinion, one of the most beautifully-detailed Formula-1 Class raceplanes ever (though certainly not one of the fastest), was the Eldon Lutz designed & built- Race #38 "Flying Dutchman" LFD-13-4 (N38Z). #38 was raced by the following pilots during its' history:

Mike Loening - Reno '74 & '76/Mojave '74
Eldon Lutz - Mojave '75 & '76
Tom Aslett - Reno '79-'84
Lori Love - Reno '84 & '85

'Fastest-Finish' for #38 Flying Dutchman was notched by Lori Love during its' final competition: a 209.683-av/mph 2nd-place finish f/the 8-lap Reno '85 F-1 Silver on 9/15/85.

(Sadly, -on 8/23/87, Aslett was killed, when #38 crashed during a test flight fm Twin Falls, ID, in preparation f/Reno '87.) *

Sun. 9/17/00-UNL Silver- Jimmy Leeward flies his P-51D #9- 'Cloud Dancer' down-low along the desert ridgeline, while fighting to hold-onto 5th-place, against the relentlessly-pursuing Hawker Sea Fury #114- 'Argonaut', -expertly-piloted by fellow veteran Unlimited air racer- Brian Sanders, in yet another classic example of a- "Ridge-Runners' Duel"!

+ A couple of- "Rush-'N Ridge-Runners"!!!......

3. Thur. 9/13/07-UNL HT-1B- Will Whiteside drives his 'Rusky' grey Yak-3 #33- "Steadfast" down the ridge enroute Outer 4 Pylon, while flyin' his standard consistently-tight courseline, -enroute a 383.887-av/mph 3rd-place heat finish: "Ridge-Runner"!

4. Thur. 9/12/02-UNL HT-1B- Sean Carroll's at the controls of Yak-9 #104- 'Russian Roulette' & running in last-place (w/a slightly-hangin' left main gear), but nonetheless, -he's still flyin' the great line of a true: "Ridge-Runner"!

Reno '09 NCAR- Wed. 9/16/09- Unlimited Class Qualifications & Practice:

Race pilot/owner- Stewart Dawson takes the racecourse at 10 AM w/his BIG & beautiful (& mighty-fast!) Hawker Sea Fury- #105- "Spirit of Texas", hoping to up his previous 428.848-mph Q-speed logged on Monday. Dawson flies one lap f/a new time & does it, -posting 430.411-mph. (3rd photo captures #105 on the 'V-O-S' during Stewart's Wed. Q-Run).

But in the process, #105's Wright R-3350 race engine went sour- ruining the team's racing plans for Reno '09, -much to everyone's huge disappointment.

Hopefully, Stewart Dawson & company will be back at Reno 2010 w/Spirit of Texas in top racing form. The air races just ain't the same without 'em! "GO TEAM SPIRIT OF TEXAS!"

Hi Anthony & Elliot-

Thanks for your positive posts. Elliot, I figured you'd most likely be one to appreciate the Flying Dutchman F-1 archive pics.

The Race #105 'H-Hopper' shot fm Outer 4 proves why a good super-telephoto long lense is essential equipment f/air racing photo work:

Here's a Reno '08 pic taken from the same vantage point, capturing the start of UNL HT-2A from a wider perspective- I opted to include some of the press shooters in the composition, rather than the usual zoom-in focus on just the rapidly-approaching planes. (Veteran photographer- Jim Dunn nailed that one down good - see the September photo in your 2010 Legacy of Speed calendars). (+ Bet those particular bushes up on the ridge gotta be the most-photographed examples in the entire Nevada desert!)

Then, to add some extra dramatics for the #105 'H-Hopper' shot, -I close-cropped the picture down a bunch more in the- 'digital darkroom', here at the studio.

Earl Ketchen flies Don Davis'/Tired Iron Air Racing Team's P-51D Race #81- "HABU" (N5449V, ex-#4/#81- 'GeGe II')...

Photos (L-R):

1. Thur. 9/16/82-E. Guide Pylon- Ketchen & HABU are captured running down along the E. Chute on their qualifying run (12th-fastest @ 371.693-mph). Earl went on to win Sunday's Silver 8-lap final @ 378.087-av/mph.

2-3. Wed. 9/14/83-W. Chute- Again, we see Earl Ketchen driving Race #81 during Qualifications the following year- this time rippin' right down on the deck thru the V-O-S ("Valley of Speed"). Ketchen logged a 374.937-mph Q-speed f/13th-spot, & won Sunday's 6-lap Bronze @ 400.717-av/mph,-just ahead of 2nd-place finisher- Bill Whittington's #08 P-51H (394.503).

Most-definately a- "Ridge-Runnin', Hedge-Hoppin',-Jack Rabbit Rouster"!!!
