  • Mystery Wreck at Stead

Every year, attending NCAR, I like to shoot the boneyard by the Aviation Classics hangar and see what's awaiting resto. Just being nosy.

In '08, I caught what appears to be a bisected Sea Fury lying in state. It was missing this year. Anyone know anything about it?

P.S.: How do I attach a pic as anything bigger than a thumbnail? $

I'm guessing that it is Race 103 that had an engine failure during the PRS in 2008

That was King Fury from the Cavanaugh Flight Museum. It crashed at Stead after running out of fuel.

If I remember correctly it crashed last year (08) somewhere around the Reno area, think they were preparing for the races.... I could be wrong though..

Here's a picture from Reno 05 when she looked a little better.

it was NOT caused by running out of fuel. it was caused by; " A ruptured center balance diaphragm that resulted in a loss of engine power."

Before that it was the polished metal "Cottonmouth".

Well cool I was wondering today what happened to that airplane that Cabanas flew and here is this thread. I now remember that wreck but June 08 seems like 20 years ago at this point. Is this being rebuilt?

the last info i had was that it was in storage as the cost of rebuilding it exceeded the going rate for a sea fury.

Anyone remember when she was "Cottonmouth" and flown by Jerry Janes?

Or why all his planes were given the same name?
