Re: Nice Video of Lefty & White Lightning
If the radiators are in the booms, why did they increase the engines' frontal areas in post -H models? Oil coolers, intercoolers, I'm so confused ...

Re: Nice Video of Lefty & White Lightning
Not sure of the exact reasoning but the oil coolers and the radiators were increased in size on the later models, so that alone required a redesign. I would venture the increase in size meant a more efficiant design

Can never see enough of Lefty and White Lightnin- here's some pics from an old photo album of mine, had to scan whole pages because the photos didn't want to come off the pages after all those years. The black lightning was on the ramp the same year- I remember something about it being repaired/rebuilt after an accident or something-anyoneKnotty Girl Crew

Re: Nice Video of Lefty & White Lightning
The early model P-38's routed supercharger air through the wing leading edges for intercooling. The system worked but was a maintenance problem, easily combat damaged and a backfire through the system could be real bad. The J, L & M moved the intercooler to the chin, allowing more space in the wings for fuel and simplifying the system.
Both White Lightnin' (Modified as Sky Ranger) and Double trouble had the turbo's removed so they no longer needed the big chin of the L and went back to the sleeker chin of the earlier models.
