    "AIR RACE JOCKEYS"...

Reno '94 NCAR- Sun. 9/19/94- RARA Awards Banquet

Three amigo Unlimited Class air race pilots pose for a group portrait w/trophies (L-R):

Brent Hisey & Alan Preston, w/1st-place UNL Gold Trophy won by Preston flying P-51D #11 Miss America @ 413.773-av/mph, & David Price w/2nd-place in the UNL Gold Final flying P-51D #4 Dago Red @ 413.116-av/mph.

Note: Reno '94 was the year of the controversial 1-time running of the infamous & unpopular Unlimited- 'Super Gold Shootout', won handily by John Penney in #77 Rare Bear @ a sedate 424.407-av/mph, over Dennis Sanders in Super Sea Fury #8 Dreadnought (@416.632) in 2nd & Bill Rheinschild flying his P-51D #45 Risky Business (@403.336).

      Bucky,

Not trying to give you a hard time, but the trophies say 1994.

Love all of the pictures and history you've been posting. Keep up the good work.

YIKES!!! - Big Thanks, Chris f/setting me straight on that big ole' hairy boo-boo!

Corrections made accordingly thanks to your help. Long story, but I'm usin' the excuse of turnin'- 'The Big 60' on Sunday (& I'm stickin' to it!)

        Let's just say a mislabeled-slide mount & 'Most-of-the-Timers' setting-in.

        Best wishes- Don 'Bucky' Dawson

Ouch, truly hard to believe isn't it!

I still think I'm 18 (in some ways) and I'm turning 60 next year... .

I'll have to toast you on Sunday... Happy new decade Bucky... only two more years for SS if you choose to go early....

                "UNSUNG HEROES"- 'Keep 'Em Flyin'!

                Reno '99 NCAR - Sun. 9/19/99

Here's an- 'on-the-go' snapshot portrait of- MIKE LOONEY

Mike's one of the top veteran warbird maintenance experts around, and has been a key man in the CAF's huge flying museum program. Mike Looney has been closely-involved w/their ultra-rare & awesome WW2 B-29 heavy bomber-"FIFI", during her lengthy & complicated overhaul, and has been the CAF's B-29 flight engineer. Mike's lent his expertise at the air races as an Unlimited Class crew member working on several teams, most notably- Lyle Shelton's #77 Rare Bear, for many years.

Mike's always super-busy, & really hard to pin-down, but somehow we always manage to cross paths at least once during race week (including this year @ Reno '09). Knowing that, -when I saw Mike Looney scootin'-by drivin' a forklift on Reno '99 Gold Sunday while I was enroute to the Awards Banquet, I was lucky to be able to capture this smiling portrait of him.

Thanks, Mike for truly- 'KEEPIN' 'EM FLYIN'!!!

Great picture of a fine mechanic and an interesting man! We have a phrase for many of his figures of speech "Looneyisms" Haven't seen Mike in a few years, hope he comes and flies with us later this year!
