Hi all time for the final report from warbirds over Wanaka 2010...
Day one of the show dawned fine and sunny but a little breezy, the crowds were lining up from before gates opened at 7am to get in and enjoy the flying action with many arriving to see 2 drawcards, first the RAAF and their 4 ship formation flying from 3 sqdn and their F/A-18a hornets and all the way from Southern California and the Commerative Air Force, the Mitsubishi A6M3 Zero.
The Zero was displayed at Warbirds by 2 pilots, SoCal wing CO Col Steve Barber, & Col Jason Sommes... Race fans will recognize the name of Jason Sommes who raced at Reno in T-6, Biplane & F1..
The Zero flew 2 sequences a day with Jason flying a solo display, the Steve flying the pm sequence involving The Catalina clubs PBY5a, 2 P-40's and a FG-1D corsair, with predictable results and the Zero being dispatched.
The F/A-18's arrived on scene and displayed their Ground attack prowess and then arriving again later in the day and flying a supremely tight 4 ship display.
By the time the F-18s arrived in the afternoon on saturday the winds were blowing 30 degrees across the runway and gusting 30kts, so for these line pilots to fly a tight display was incredible.
Unfortunately the winds forced the cancellation of several displays.
One item that didnt get cancelled was Jurgis Karyis who flew formation with the NZ warbirds C-47 with Jurgis and his self designed Juka but with Jurgis parked firmly under the C-47 between the motors....
Sunday Dawned cold and with Rain overnight dampened down the dust that started blowing around the day before.
the 2 P-40's started the show before the NZ Yak 52 team showed their stuff.. the 8 SHIP formation team showed their brilliant show off, before 11 of the 15 airworthy T-6's formated..
Another special formation was the Zero and Mk9 spitfire, this tribute to the forgotten RAF campaign in Burma during WW2.
There were many fine acts this year, to many for a tired airshow goer to report on.. so here are some pics...
