Re: Air Racer Airframe & Wing Stress clues...

Darndest thing, when I first looked at the photos, I saw a very distinct flexing in the upper wing skin... Looking at them again, I can't clearly see it. Is this like one of those things where you have to squint and then can see what's there??

Anyone know if the original wing on the yak was metal or fabric? I know they "metalized" the fuse... Unsure about the wings.. They may well be designed to flex quite a bit and we're just seeing it because the wing skin is metal and not fabric?

    Jussst thinkin' out loud..

PS... forgive the brain fart... I was looking at two different sets of pix...

Still wonder about the wing skin tho...

Rather than re-edit.. looking at the build photos I have (upcoming.. story.... someday) it looks like the wings were originally metal....

Wayne, for some reason I was thinking Yak wings were wood... fabric over wood?

The first shot in the thread I believe looks worse because of light reflections. Seeing it in the second set shows it to be very minimal and woud need to be compared from a similiar angle of the plane on the ground to see if it really is that bad.

John, Yaks had all their armament located in the engine bay ala the Zero, Me/bf109, and some Yaks had a Canon in the hub like the P-39/63 series. the original design for the Yak 3 called for the Canon in the hub, 2 12.7mm guns on top of the motor, and 2 in the wings but the wing guns were abandoned.

Could it be plywood over wooden spars+ribs ?

It is an all metal wing with wooden tips.

The standard Yak 11 wing is all metal with metal wing tips, there isn't a centre section in a standard 11 as such but the two halves of the wing join together under the fuselage effectively making a one piece wing. The area that looks to be buckling is the tank bay area on a standard Yak 11.

Early Yak fighters (1 and 7) had a wooden wing but by the time the 11 was introduced the wing was all metal

will they rebuild present wings or is the plan to R&R wings completely?
