Just for chits and giggles, I was looking at the race speeds over the careers of both airplanes.. mind you, RACE speeds, not qualifying speeds, as we all know, qualifying is a one lap speed, *usually* not indicitive of what the airplane will be doing come Sunday's finals... or during the heats....
Without copying all the data... here's a quick comparison...
Dago Red
2002 heat 3-a 468.5610
2002 gold final 466.8340
2000 gold final 462.0070
2002 heat 2-a 453.9370
2000 heat 2-a 443.0370
2000 heat 3-a 441.2970
Rare Bear
1991 gold final 481.6180
1996 heat 2-a 473.1600
1990 gold final 468.6200
1991 heat 3-a 465.3850
1995 gold final 465.1590
1995 heat 3-a 462.3290
Interesting comparison and special thanks to the Reno Air Race Association and Mark Johnston for Mark's brilliant research tool at their website in the searchable database of race results. http://airrace.org/
It's often talked about that the purebread Mustang AirRacer is a faster airplane than, well, anything else out there, it's also talked about, especially in Round Engine circles, that the big roundies can keep their speed up longer than the "Mouse Motor" guys...
Though the figures above do not show qualifying times, and we all know, Dago Red and Skip Holm now own that record... what we see up there is the race record, still held by Rare Bear and consistantly faster race speeds, on final race day, as well as during the heats...
This is all food for thought, I'm a TERRIBLE statistics person... but.. just from a laymans point of view... it makes for some interesting thoughts about how this year might pan out....
Anyone else salivating right now??????
