Unlimited Qual predictions anyone?

In late August I jotted these predictions down. Expecting the top Mustangs to be fast, but not show all their cards in qualifyng, but wait till the end of the week. Especially race 177.

The Rare Bear team decides to put a new number in the record books...

I have a feeling Qualifying speeds will be down a bit further. With the weather conditions and so many teams with unknown potential I think everyone is going to play their cards very close to their chest.

Unlimited hydroplane designer Ted Jones once commented when asked who he thought would win a given race..."I wouldn't bet on a hydroplane race if I owned every boat in the field".


I kind of like that way of thinking. I can name a laundry list of hot-rod Unlimiteds who have been sidelined at Reno over the years because they blew up their equipment trying to qualify.

I would be surprised to see Strega qualify in the 500's. If you look at past history, they usually qualify fast enough to be in a comfortable spot, but not fast enough to risk breaking during quals. I figure Rare Bear will be top qualifier - pretty standard. Dreadnaught will be in the top 5 and keep everyone honest as always

Of course, we'll know by end of day Wednesday, so this is all academic!

As there isn't the usual group of 3350 Sea Furies posting speeds of around 430 MPH, I am wondering what is the point of really pushing the engines hard in qualifying?
The pot will begin to really boil during Saturday's Gold heat race.
I'm curious what the 1941 group of racers is going to do.
Look at the FW-190 and compare it to the Wildcat and P-40.
To me, RENO is about racing AND aviation history.

Yeah the top 4 get a buy on Thursday. Other than the little bit of $$ for TQ, not much real reason to push it.
