Can anyone confirm that Dave Cornell and John Penny are no longer a part of the Rare Bear team?
I can confirm that Dave Cornell has left the team. Knowing who dialtapper is he would know about Penney, if he says then it is so.

...like the next non-Cornell engine. Sad news, indeed.

Hopefully we will get to hear some info from John himself.

Re: Rare Bear-Where is my Friend?

I was wondering why Mr. Penney appeared subdued in all of the interviews this year. Also noticed that he mentioned the continuing flight testing during the races, repeatedly, without the slightest bit of humor. Just an observation.......

Mr Penney has stepped away from the Rare Bear program before, I am thinking it was 2006, just before Rod Lewis purchased it.

Ron Bucarelli flew it that year.

Re: Rare Bear-Where is my Friend?

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Mr. Penney after last years gold. He was generous with his time and he was very polite to my young son. Class act from my personal experience.

I will be sad if he is not running around the pylons anymore. He is a great ambassador to the air races. I hope that he stays a part of the air races in some capacity.

I have a feeling Mr. Penney will let us all know when he retires. Just because he may have stepped away from the bear team, does not mean he wont fly for another team.

Mr. Penney should be here soon enough to let us know more. The last few years he has posted here his thoughts of the bear, races, and the goings on of the week, as well as answer a few questions. I hope he returns again this year to do the same.

                    Hi Boom 3

I read your blog and it really makes me sad to hear how you were treated by this "so-called crew" for the rare bear. (i can't even capitolize the letters of the name)

Lyle would NEVER NEVER allow that to happen!!! I would sit out in front of the pits on a barstool that I had confiscated, and talk to the fans. That was to keep the crew members able to work.

The times --which were many-- that a fan would come up to me and ask if Lyle could say hi to his young son would always et results!!! I would go in the trailor and get Lyle to say hi to the young man. The memories I have of that brings a tear to my eye as I am writing this.

It is so sad to have a rude arrogant owner and crew treat the fans like you were treated.

I always pulled for the bear but after this year with no acknowledgement for Lyle by RARA and his former airplane crew I will never go back to the races.

                    Just venting

Bill Kelly--(former instructor, that got Lyle his crop-dusting license)

Re: Rare Bear-Where is my Friend?

To be fair there was a nice spread in the program honoring Lyle, Al, Vicki and someone else who escapes me at the moment.

But there should have been a missing man/last lap.

                          I'm an inline fan myself.

I had never in my life heard or felt anything like The Bear with the 3 blade.AWESOME.

Just a thought here.I'm glad someone bought the plane and kept it the way it was meant to be a RACER.

Some otherworldly dillweed could have gotten a hold of it and turned back to a stocker. That my friends would have really sucked!

There was, on Thursday, honoring all that have gone west in the last year.

                              Hey billlavonne,

Just to make it clear I'm not out to get anyone. I don't know anyone on this team and in the real world I'm sure they are probably all pretty decent guys. At little cost to me I've enjoyed watching Rare Bear race like everyone else.

The topic came up and so I thought I'd share my experience. Maybe someone on the team will read the posts here and rethink thier attitude a little. Honestly I could care less if anyone says anything to me. I'm just suprised that nobody even acknowledges a young kid with eyes poppin out and grinning from ear to ear because they are finally standing in front of the beast that is Rare Bear. A simple "Hey little man!" or something really means the world to kids. The other teams seem to know this.

hmm, I missed it. In my opinion it would have been more appropriate on Sunday.
