    Re: Visit to Reno, 2011

This is what I love about the "Reno family".
I did hook Ian up with the British contingent of NA, so between them and all of you wonderful guys, he is assured to have a great time and will become one of us plane nuts.

      Re: Visit to Reno, 2011

I recommend that you join the Checkered Flag Club, a bit pricey at $1000.00 US for the first year ($800 renewals thereafter) but since our Dear Leader has devalued the dollar so much against the Pound maybe you can swing it. Advantages:

You get to park right behind the grandstands and get a ride on a golf cart to our own hangar! (When leaving you can get to your hotel before the "regular folks" even get out of the parking lot).

Free lunch (also have a continental breakfast for free if you get there that early).

Free drinks all day, everything from water to beer to booze (don't get a DUI, I save the alcohol for the hotel but as pilot I have to do that).

Our own grandstand with a good view of the races.

      Membership includes the PIT PASS!

Great guest speakers every year, like Bob Hoover, Dick Rutan, always a USAF retired or active general or two, airline CEOs, war heros, you name it.

I agree the Silver Legacy is a good place to stay, my favorite, Circus Circus is OK too. Never stayed at the El Dorado but it doesn't have many rooms and sells out. They do have the best buffet in my opinion. Best kept secret of where to eat is the food court on the bottom floor of the Silver Legacy, it is now only open on Friday and Saturday but you can get the same prime rib, lobster or turkey that the sit down restaurants charge a ton for at half the price and you can eat there or get it to go.

If you are a combination pilot/aviation fan and gearhead you WILL get addicted and will want to come back!

There is also a Chairman's club right on the flight line, I think the price is about the same, parking not quite as good, food is supposed to be better, no guest speakers but airshow performers come in there for free food, maybe somebody else can comment on that.

Several different "approaches" to enjoying the greatest aviation event around!

      Welcome!!

        Re: Visit to Reno, 2011

        Hello All
I've been away for a few days on business so have not logged onto the forum - just been reading through all the new messages and wanted again to thank you all for your valuable contributions.
There's a LOT of stuff we can take away from your advice. Just taking one small example, no baseball caps. I would have easily left a wide brimmed hat at home and kicked myself when I got burnt!
I have made a long list from all of your comments and will get surfing today to check out hotels.
Again, many thanks - each and every comment is appreciated.
        Best
        Ian
