but great news for P-40 fans... Avspecs based in Auckland NZ have reported that their latest project, Curtiss P-40C AK295 restored for Rod Lewis has flown for the first time. Unfortunately i am at the other end of the country, but the Avspecs Book of Faces webpage has pics from the first flight as well as videos of the first engine runs.

Super cool. Not too long ago I heard a story from a family friend that there is a P40 burried someplace on his ranch here in the bay area. Apparently it crashed back in the '40s and was just burried. There is a map and I guess X does mark the spot. I wonder if a metal detector could pick it up? My guess is that there isn't much left by now, but you never know.
Its always cool to hear that another p40 has been saved.

You never know. John Paul and Steve Seghetti had a P-40 that had been buried on a farm in Canada after the war. They dug it up and Steve was restoring it for several years before he got Sparky. "Cutissaurous Rex" they were calling it.Comment

Anyone have a ground penetrating radar setup? There are a few other reasons I doubt much will be left such as the ranch is right on the edge of the bay, and the field may have been used for wild rice. From the story I heard, it was a pretty hard crash. Not sure if it burned or not. I did a little digging for info and the only thing I found was a listing of one that crashed in '42 that flew out of Hamilton Field. I found a bunch of listings about P38s crashing in the area (like one 500 yards off the end of the runway out in the marsh.)
It would be fun to tow a GPR setup around and see what we could find. The ranch is going to be closed in the very near future and returned to the bay. If someone really wanted to find this, the effort should be made pretty quickly.
