When reports of the crashed helicopter during the raid against Bin Laden first appeared, it was said it may have been shot down and they destroyed it intentionally afterwards before leaving, but the tail section got blown over the wall and was intact.
Now it's reported that the heli hit the wall with the tail boom during the landing, knocking it off and causing the crash in the first place, the tail landing on the outside of the compound and the helicopter settling within.
This seemingly standard military-SNAFU-during-a-secret-mission has revealed a new helicopter unknown to all but those who built, use or command it. Many stealth features seen in photos of the tail show it to be a unique machine indeed!
Could this be the reason the sophisticated RAH-66 Comanche stealth helicopter was cancelled so deep into the program and after all that money was already spent?
I never could understand how they could drop the Comanche when the thing was already flying (TWO aircraft completed) and showing promising results. Back then it was said that they needed the RAH-66's funds to maintain and upgrade the existing heli fleet. Looks like this was one of the "upgrades", eh?
NOW I think I understand...They needed a stealth helicopter that could carry a payload (human or whatever), not another fighter-type heli like an Apache. This modded or all-new machine must be it.
