For something like that, you'd think they'd want to have someone there specifically to film it. I mean silly me to think it would've been pretty amazing to get a record in the making on film that may never, ever be broken....

Are you saying that the plane went from a complete stop, no forward motion, and then to 9,842 feet which is 3 kilometers, in 9.19 seconds?

That sounds impossible. I would think it might take 9 seconds for it to leave the ground. Is this correct?

Correction, it is 91.9 seconds, 1 minute and 31.9 seconds according to Wikipedia on Rare Bear. Slight error with the decimal point placement.

Rare Bear has also set many performance records for piston-driven aircraft, including the 3 km World Speed Record of 528.33 mph (850.26 km/h) set August 21 1989, and a new time-to-climb record (3,000 meters in 91.9 seconds set in 1972 (9842.4 ft - 6,426 fpm), breaking a 1946 record set in a stock Bearcat).

Chances are you don't need to correct BCIV, he was there for both. Just a mistaken keystroke.

What was the flight plan on the climb record?

Anyone have a memory or the details of the flight like how long on the ground at what speed, then how long in level flight to what speed, then climb angle, feet per minute...?

I happen to know where the cards and profile stuff is for that flight. It does exist...and more important, it's safe.

Grampi, at the time the record was set, all available resources were focused on getting it done...and the only 'preserving it for posterity' issues they worried about were whether or not the FIA got it on record. The whole thing was done on a shoestring budget and was attempted in order to attract a sponsor for the 1973 racing season.

Skyvan, Ch. 9 of Racing for the Gold by Dell Rourk profiles the time to climb record attempt in detail, including the performance figures you seek, as well as the unsuccessful 15km attempt.

It's a called google search. You type stuff in you want to find and it gives you places to find it, most of the time quicker than it takes to post a reply.

Thanks, but I meant is this info (where he was talking about the climb record specifically) available somewhere on the internet without having to buy a book?

Both 3K and Time to Climb talked about in detail in attached thread.

Just buy the book, you won't regret it. Mine cost me 99 cents on Amazon. A lot of other interesting stuff in there too.

Pull out the plastic and buy the book. Having read it I will say it is well worth the price (+ shipping). JUST DO IT!
