I was able to speak with Mel for a couple of words this afternoon, His Grandson Russ was with him and was able to pass along that we are all pulling for him. Wayne Richardss has sent a link to Mel's daughter Nora, and she can read him any stories that we all post here to keep him cheered up.

Mel, I only met you once time, but it was enough to inspire me. In all the people I've witnessed in the pits at Reno, your smile was the most genuine. I hope to live a life worthy of such a smile.

Thanks John, it's hard to express how it feels knowing that Mel is where he is. Knowing that all the good will expressed here will make it to his ears is very special. Like I said before, guys like Mel don't grow on trees, in fact, I don't really know if there is a "next generation" when it comes to guys like him, but I guess that you would represent that next generation.. but you're getting old too, who passes the torch?

If we could dip our fingers into the knowledge in that man's head, we'd still only know very little. I think he can tell the health of an engine just by smelling the oil...

Mel, It was a true priveledge and an honor working with you on the BEAR. Your passion for that airplane was and is unsurpassed. You will be sorely missed, and never forgotten. We love you Mel!!
