There has been a NOTAR type helicopter that I have seen flying around Stead off and on and it looks like it is painted black, maybe Washoe County Sheriffs Raven program is getting a upgrade?

Everyone has to keep in mind too....things sound different in the dark. Temperature is different at night so sound travels and is propagated differently. And without the benefit of 'sight', you lose a lot of situational awareness as to direction, altitutude, speed, etc.

This is why the majority of special operations sh*t is done under cover of darkness.

So something that you 'hear' at night might sound (and look) completely different by light of day.

And I though it was because of low visibility.

I must say, I have heard plenty of night-flying helicopters when they were flying in groups spraying Mountain View and nearby cities for Med flys many years ago, and they sounded like regular helicopters to me.
