Update from Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center regarding patients from Reno Air Races disaster - Sept. 24.

Reno, Nev. - Two patients are continuing inpatient treatment at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center following the Reno Air Races disaster Sept. 16. One additional patient listed earlier in serious condition has been discharged. The conditions of all remaining patients are as follows:

· 1 patient is in serious condition

· 1 patient is in fair condition

Given the nature of the accident, patients were treated for injuries due to both blunt force and penetrating trauma. Common injuries included fractures of the legs, arms, ribs and fingers, head injuries, amputations, abrasions, lacerations, and chemical burns. Due to U.S. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations prohibiting hospitals from identifying patients, no further specifics on the nature and type of these injuries will be given.

Saint Mary’s has revised its total number of victims treated after reviewing patient charts. Saint Mary’s initially received a total of 33 patients transported Friday from the site of the disaster in Stead, including 30 people via the hospital’s Emergency Department and three in two urgent care centers. One patient has died.

Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends, visitors, community members and Reno Air Races staff who have been affected by this tragic accident. We have been deeply touched by the community support for the injured and their families, and the dedication from our physicians, nurses and staff. Our No.-1 priority is the health and safety of our patients, and we are working diligently to care for these patients.

A bit irritated at some of the articles linked here. Theairshow people are thrying to distance themselves from the Reno accident (understandably) and make a distiction between air shows and air RACING. But every air SHOW I've been to has a jet demo team flying OVER the crowd and getting a lot closer to the spectators than any of the racing planes ever do. The racers fly parallel to the spectators. So what's the difference? Things break. You've got just as much chance (maybe more,actually) of a F-16 in your lap as you do a racing Mustang.

Personally, I plan to attend air SHOWS AND air RACING. The folks that put on these events do their absolute best to try and insure the safety of the event. Crud happens. It may be cold, but it's part of life.

Long live the NCAR!

Exactly. How many times did the T-Birds and the Patriots over fly the crowd at Reno? A lot! The one that really stands out to me is the minimum radius turns that you see in the military demos. Sure, it's farther away, but a bird that big, at that speed could easily come into the crowd if the pilot was incapacitated of suffered a mechanical at the wrong time. I have honestly been scared more times at airshows as a spectator than I ever have been at the races.

History shows that the military jet demonstrations are more dangerous than air racing by a large margin. And no one is seriously trying to stop those acts. I was actually surprised at how much at the crowd and over the crowd flying the T-birds did.

Just heard that a member of the Elvin family had to undergo surgery this morning because of an infection. Prayers for the family would be a good thing.
