Just finished my Sunday paper and read the Air Race articles. For those of you not having the luxury of the RGJ Sunday paper heres the links to both:

I remember hearing back in the early 70's, that the air races were the biggest boom to the economy of Reno of any event. I don't know if that is still true, but obviously according to the article, it still has a significant impact and sounds like the City of Reno would be behind keeping the Air Races, I see that as a PLUS.
This guy Danko, the attorney looks at things a little different then most. All of us accept what is typically refered to as a reseaonable exposure to risk in everything we do, including viewing the Air Races. Danko takes the stand, that no matter what, their is ALWAYS an unreasonable risk in whatever we do, especially AFTER an accident has occurred. I believe on his website it says he owns a Cirrus. If I was the CEO of Cirrus, I'd be shaking in my boots.

Mullen's done some competent reporting in the past, but he failed to identify Danko as an "aviation lawyer and pilot" who stands to make enormous personal gain from the attention he's getting as an authority concerned with public safety. Maybe the RGJ is in for a percentage.

In my opinion the biggest problem with the media is there choice of "experts". The guy that runs McCarran in Las Vegas got his job because his Dad married Senator Reid a million years ago and had no airport knowledge or experience. That is why it is a filthy mess and ran so poorly, yet he was the Expert who the media called on to ask about "Home made Aircraft" after an accident here.

Let's just hope that clearer minds prevail in what ultimately is decided and is fair to the Race Pilots and Fans. I will live with some changes if they have to, but personally I would vote to leave it alone. Thanks, KC

I totally agree with you. They are suppose to be our local news paper, and, which is printed and produced by local people. It amazes me how ignorant they can be at times by publishing one sided editorial/reporting that most always works against our community's best interest.

They should present news in a neutral format, without any sensationalization and/or any intend to sway the readers opinion. Any unsupported/unproven/biased content should only be printed with notation to that fact, and when possible, knowledgeable/informed rebuttal content directly afterwards.

Its just a matter of time before our crappy rag bites the dust. They can only blame themselves for loosing audience.

Ok, with that said it's beer thirty and football time.

I think that given the quotes from the FAA, even they have a pretty common-sense position about the realities of safety of the races. Like Houghton said, if you mitigate all the risk, you'd have checkers and ping-pong. Put us all in concrete bunkers and make us watch it on pay-per-view tv.

I think Danko is a tool, typical scum-sucking lawyer willing to eat his own [pilots] for his own gain.

I'm so confident that the races will continue, I just [yesterday] submitted my annual vacation bid for next year's race dates [9/12-16] to ensure that I am off at the right time.

I'm with you. It sucks not having a single decent local paper. Once upon a time (in a galaxy far, far away), newspapers gave you facts, as objectively as possible, because they trusted readers to be intelligent enough to draw their own conclusions.

I liked th reference to "checkers and ping-pong". This lawyer is thinking...well, you could get nailed by a ping-pong ball or splinters from the paddle and, with checkers you get high cholesterol from sitting on your b***.

Been going since '72. I know there's a risk. I'll see y'all in '12. We'll toast Jimmy, soothe our sorrows and party in an appropriate,Stead kinda way (ie, the skys the limit).
