You are way too late on your date, and therefore incorrect on your owner/answer/crew. Sherm and Kerch would be later.

You guys just let me know when you're ready, okay? :-)

Oh, and I know what airplane young John is sitting in......wait a minute...wrong picture. Sorry.

I remember the cold in 86, but my clearest memory of that year was the sound. Something about the cold and the wind direction maybe, but Stiletto sounded unlike anything I'd ever heard before or since. Really turning the revs, really loud, and the sound was crisp and clear...almost artificial.

Remember Steve talking afterward and saying that the Gold leaders flew over him while he was landing Tsunami after the mayday and he said it hurt his ears in the cockpit with the canopy closed and helmet on.

Got to make a guess on John's photo.

The airplane is of course the Signal Sea Fury, race #87, N878M.

My guess is the setting is Reno, after winning the 1967 Harold's Club Transcon race from Rockford, Illinois, at 417.346.

The guys are Lyle, Mike Carroll, Don Newberger (Mike's crew chief), Vern Barker, and E.D. Weiner (who had finished second almost 11 minutes after Mike). Really guessing on those last three.

                  Re: A Wingman quiz...

AWESOME, Lowell.....Lyle Shelton, Mike Carroll, Don Newberger, and Vern Barker. The last guy is not E.D. Neither one of us know who it is. Slack and I have been debating over the last guy all day long. I thought it may have been Dick Tomasaulo, but the guy in the picture is too short.

Newberger and Barker owned Pylon Air, which worked on both of E.D.'s Mustangs, as well as built up N878M and Cobra III for Carroll, , and Larry Havens' Crazy Horse. They also acted as Leroy Penhall's crew.

But the photo was taken at Reno '66...because that was the year that Lyle raced it for Carroll. Mike did not have the qualifications at that time to race in the Unlimited Class, and apparently Lyle "had half of his time" in the Sea Fury.

                    Sledge39,
Do you by chance have any other pictures of N66111? That airplane is the one we have the least pictures of. That was Lyle's little red Triumph TR-3 in the background.

Great stuff guys. I love seeing all this old stuff. Having attended Reno for the first time in 2000 (and every year since, except 2001), you get much better history here and at Scotty's site than I ever did from Air Comix.

Sledge -- you have some really great stuff -- maybe you should post some quizzes!

What kind of equipment and film were you using back in the 60s and 70s? Your photos are beautifully exposed and quite sharp. Very nicely scanned, too.

...thanks Neal...actually more a result of photoshop than good photography to start with...

Thanks Neal, 1986 was my first year at Reno and it was 50 Deg's and a light breeze early and then the sun went behind the cloud and the wind picked up. A very cold Gold Race....
