Part of it I heard from Sherman Smoot, but I'm not sure where he heard it.

        Re: 2012 Reno Air Races

Just got off the phone with the Reno FSDO. They know nothing about a green light from the FAA.

I've called the NTSB and have left a message for the gentleman heading up the Reno investigation. As soon as I hear back, I'll post.

How about Pre-ticket, tickets. I would pay for 2012 tickets right now to help RARA. Whatever RARA can't make it work will be OK with us.

As for camping we rented a motor home last year and have some of the best memories. Only at Reno and OSH can you spend enough time that you hear..... "OH, IT'S ONLY A REGULAR P-51". Really by the end of the week you are numb to normal P-51's. If you are a late sleeper and don't want to wake up for the F-1's and Bipes (best racing by far) you will get to hear a growling unlimited up at dawn. Then you look around at all the other late sleepers that are looking into the sky with their boxers on..

Just saying. We missed 2011, but the funds for 2012 are already in the bank, and waiting for the trigger.

I have a 36' Bounder RV I might bring up if I get a couple friends to join in on fuel and lot expenses - seems like the Optimist Lot would be a cool place to park.

How quickly do the RV spaces fill up?

Any other recommendations for a newb in the planning stages?
We always park the trailer in the St Michael's Church lot. It's dry camping but the church has showers. Plus, they serve dinners and have ice. Very nice people as well.

We also arrange with SaniHut and get a sewer pumpout about Friday or Saturday.

If you want full hookups, nearest one is Bordertown out on I-395. It's sorta close in but it fills up FAST (probably already too late.)

We've been in the Optimist's lot for 18 years with friends (who've been there about twice that long). There is a dump and freshwater available; ice; blue villages; dumpsters; security; etc. It's closer to the "action" with nearby access to the grandstands and pits.

Keep in mind the NTSB only investigates the accident and makes recommendations to the FAA. Responsibility for implementing any changes rests with the FAA.

And the FAA can totally ignore the NTSB. I've always thought that was a weird setup.

                    Well,
Just think about it a little more. The NTSB is an advisory board. The FAA is the administration responsible for regulation.

                      <t/j>

The reason I said it was weird was because I have a friend that managed to get sideways with the FAA. (I think it's his charming personality.) They tried to pull his license, he appealed. The NTSB said essentially that they thought the FAA was all wet and recommended against suspending his license and continuing with the process. The FAA totally ignored them. It went to court and the FAA lost. But a lot of time and grief would have been avoided if the FAA wasn't able to blow off NTSB recommendations. Just sayin... <end of t/j>

                        Well,
They're not happy until you're not happy. No question there!
Actually, I haven't ever had anything but good experiences with the FAA.

And who knows what the insurance companies will want...

I'd guess that there has already been a preliminary look at other somewhat similar accidents and how they were been handled (race cars or parts into the crowd, etc).

If a new airfield is required , the new Spaceport America opened in New Mexico might make an alternative site.
It is in a very sparsly populated area and is next to the White Sands Missile Range.

We do occasionally have air races here in Australia. I have been to one in Tasmania and another in Victoria, so I am sure if people were willing to travel, they would be more than welcome to hold an international event over here.

Great ideas from all! We of C-96/C-97/C-77 discussed this over the following few days after the incident on Friday. Ultimately we would all come together in Sept. whether there was racing, show, or empty air. We were all together on 9-11 and found that just sitting at the field talking with friends was the best medicine. So if nothing comes together at the very least we should plan on a mutal support group to plant our butts on the line, tip a few to those we lost & support each other.

All of the Thunder Mustang group have already decided before we left Reno last September that we are having our Thunder Fest 2012 races or not next September. We will plan our fly-in and BBQ anyway. Hope others do the same.

                                See you in Sept
