All of the Thunder Mustang group have already decided before we left Reno last September that we are having our Thunder Fest 2012 races or not next September. We will plan our fly-in and BBQ anyway. Hope others do the same.

I can appreciate people trying to pick up the slack and address all the uncertainty, but putting on anything less than the NCAR would be like replacing a all-beef hotdog with a tofu-pup -- even with all the trimmings.

I have no quarrel with wingnuts trying to have something on the burner if the '12 races are called, even if it amounts to eulogizing the races before they're officially dead. I still give NCAR five out of nine to happen next year.

IMHO, I doubt you'll get all of the same people to show up -- cast, crew or crowd -- for an airshow/warbird orgy without the races.

I think it certainly would be the way to go, if it's deemed the air races can't go ahead with 2012 because they're still waiting for NTSB/FAA decisions.

For that matter, I wonder if it could be done prior to the start of race week. I'm sure lots of us remember when race week didn't start quite so early. Maybe go back to the original schedule, making room for static displays, photo sessions etc?

I like the "both" solution.

So if nothing comes together at the very least we should plan on a mutal support group to plant our butts on the line, tip a few to those we lost & support each other.

Here's another thought that some of you more in the know of pre-race activities might be able to answer...
With the talk of how the last couple of pylons might be adjusted in the future (remember - we're thinking positives here) if they do change them would that require all the racers to go through PRS due to the changed course? I know normally they go if they haven't raced before (at all or in a new class) or if they haven't raced in 3 years. Don't know how course adjustments are handled.

Most of us in Box A-72 (now in A-35) were in attendance in 2001. I was constantly checking the net for any reference of whether the races would be held or not. The final word before we left Boise was that the "Races Were On". Disappointed that they weren't, Yes. But we still were fortunate enough to see friends that go to Reno each year. I have met people from across the globe that I see each year at Reno. I agree that something should continue at Reno if the NTSB & FAA shut it down. However, I also believe that the Air Races are a National Treasure that need to continue. Not up to me. I will be there in 2012!

As long as I can remember it has always been the 3rd weekend in September and the week leading up to that weekend.

So, 2012 will be the week of the 10th through the 16th.

I agree this is a great idea, as long as it is just a contingency plan. As I was reading through the posts, I got the feeling we were "giving up" on the Air races - that it was conceded the Races were done. It was just a thought that bothered me. Not that WE have a choice whether the NCARs continue, but our voices have to be heard loud and clear if the time comes. I hope we continue to plan as if the Races were going to be held, but with the afore-mentioned PLAN B in the hip pocket should a temporary halt occur.

That's how I normally remember it as well, but September 1st lands on a Saturday, and I wasn't sure whether to count that as the first weekend or not! lol

The balloon races are scheduled for September 7-9, 2012. If that helps...

Easy way to tell when. Labor day weekend is always the rib cook-off. The next weekend is balloon races. That is the start of the races( practice etc...). The weekend after the balloon races (isn't that an oxy-moron?) is the finals of the Air Races.

For Sept it's:

Rib Cook off 1-3
Balloon Races 7-9
Air Races 12-16
Street Vibrations 19-23
